New Year London Mini Meet

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I will be there too on 13th and don't mind walking to a different Pizza Express (as long as it is Pizza Express). I don't know how many heads I have got at the moment!

I don't think there will be any problems with regard to over-booking for Valentines during the day, more likely to be a problem during the evening.

So I vote we peek into the original Pizza Express, and if too busy then we amble on to the second PE!

Bid :)

:(*is disappointed to be missing this, while on the other side of the world, coz he wants to meet Mumble and Tally in particular, mainly coz they're female, Aspie and around his age* Who says I'm fickle? Having said that, Kathryn seems quite cool too.

The only thing I won't miss is the pizzas.

I'm sure we will find somewhere selling food if it comes to it.

I have a very sensitive nose when it comes to finding food  I shall follow my built in sat-nav / food homing device in the food hunt :eat:

the other side of the world

Anywhere nice? My geography equates this side of the world with the UK and rain, other side of the world with Australia and sun, and nothing in between  If it's sunny where you are and someone else is buying the plane tickets we could move the mini-meet a few time zones East

How about 13 time zones east? Your geography's pretty accurate! I'm in New Zealand for 4 weeks - landed last Friday, and since Saturday, it has indeed been warm and sunny! B) Should last until this Saturday too, before turning less favourable. My brother's wedding is coming up on Saturday, February 20th - that's the primary reason for me and Mum coming over here, but when you come so far, you wanna make a proper job of it! Hence the 4-week stay. And I've not seen my brother for over 2 years either, since he left home for New Zealand. But it does mean I miss out on your meet, unfortunately. :( And I would even if you did relocate it: on the 13th, we'll all be away on the long stag/hen weekend, and if you moved it to the 20th, well that's taken up by the aforementioned rather important family event. ;)

By the way, doesn't that side of the world equate to "UK and snow" at the moment?

All three of us would be happy to oblige, Gordie - just pay our fares to NZ and you can meet us. ;)

Alak and alas I must announce that me and the boy won't be able to make it after all...

I got an e-mail on Friday reminding me that I have a very-boring-but-have-to-attend-really tutorial all day on the 13th...

Ben's not too put out as he is now spending the day at 'best mates', probably playing X-Box games for the duration

Mind you, one thing we did get out of this was the tip-off that those with GF/DF diet needs can get something 'off the peg' at Pizza Express, and as next week was cancelled I took young fella me lad there for lunch today...

Goota say, though, not all that impressed :(

Got off to a good start with 'Rustica' dried toms and a 'mixed olive salad', both of which were very naice, but he went for a main Pollo and something or other salad which with the dough balls not included was pretty bland (horrible tasteless lettuce) and i just had a starter which was also very very poor - nowt but rocket and a few baby plum toms and a very SMALL bit of torn mozerella. rockets okay to a point, but come on...

Even more annoying, the menu we downloaded last week has been replaced, and most of the good GF/DF stuff that was on it has now gone, including the wild mushroom risotto he'd been looking forward to trying :wallbash::wallbash:

On the plus side Ben loved baby figs in a cinnamon and whaite waine coulis and i had a teeny tiny little lemon meringue tart thingy that was about the size of a jammy dodger biscuit; so no 'guilt' 'cos it was so small, yet still a nice treat!

Then we got the bill...:whistle::whistle: Don't get much bang for your buck in that chain, does ya? Makes a nice shange, though...

Anyhoo - Make like Ben next saturday and have fun...

Thanks for the restaurant review BD. Sorry it was disappointing. Each to their own, I guess, although I appreciate restricted diets are hard to cater for.

When my family go out it's practically compulsory to eat at Pizza Express - one is fussy and one is vegetarian and they love it. I've eaten at various restaurants in the chain far more times than I can count and never been disappointed yet. Usually the bill isn't too bad. I especially like the Caffe Reale - coffee plus a little dish of figs in cinnamon syrup and marscapone on the side . They took it off the menu, much to my chagrin, then put it back again.

Hope you and Ben enjoy your respective Saturdays, and maybe we can arrange a child friendly meet when the weather gets warmer.

Well, I might be an oldie, but I will be happy to travel to NZ, and Gordie may be pleasantly surprised !!!!! :))

Well I like Pizza Express. It does what it says, I think it's quite reasonably priced, it tastes nice, and the atmosphere is generally nice - not pretentious and not screaming kiddie (no offence to screaming kiddies before you (you being a general you...) shout at me!!). If you want posh Michelin star grub go to a posh Michelin star restaurant. Simples. And, no, I can't spell Michelin.

Anyway, I'm coming on Saturday for the company :gather:, not just the food (despite the fact that my posts might read to the contrary!!).

I especially like the Caffe Reale - coffee plus a little dish of figs in cinnamon syrup and marscapone on the side .

Ooh, this could be fun. Face in the coffee, marscapone for the areas requiring extra treatment, and figs on the eyes... I see a whole new line in eat and have a beauty treatment at the same time opening up :devil:

I have just got wind that there might be a 'surprise' chez Jaded next weekend. I don't know why the leopard is changing his spots after 20 years of wedded bliss spent moaning about commercialism every February but I think he might be trying to impress me at the mo (bit late). Nothing to do with the boys weekend football tour to sunny Spain he wants to go on, I'm sure. Will keep you posted.

Everyone who's coming, I thought it would be a good idea for us to share some mobile numbers. I know some of us already have each other's numbers, but it might be useful, especially for the first-time meeter-uppers who don't know what we look like.

On Thursday I will PM out a list of mobile numbers to everyone who PMs me with theirs.

I don't do phones but otherwise a good idea :) I've got Bid and Kathryn's numbers if they're still the same from the last meet so can text if I get lost ... Although if I get lost, that doesn't bode well for the rest of you

BTW, I know I've said it before, but Waterloo Bridge really is a mess at the moment. If you're coming to Waterloo and walking over give yourself a bit of extra time. They probably won't be digging at the weekend, but you still have to cross the road / go under and use the opposite pavement and they have various contraflows in place for the traffic so it can be quite busy and you get silly cyclists who think they can beat the cars by going the wrong way up the wrong side and darting up onto the pavement when a bus comes towards them and take the pedestrians out.:shame:

Excellent idea! Now I'm trying to figure out how to get my whole face into the cup. :hypno:

Karen it will be great to see you! About time too. Is there anyone else out there (new or "old") who'd like to come but hasn't yet spoken? :)

My mobile number is the same as before - will pm you Tally.

I'm really confused now. I was told that we are now meeting in Covent Garden and not Waterloo. Is everyone aware of this change, and when was it decided ?

Panic not, we're still meeting at Covent Garden at the big yellow cross!

I think Mumble's thinking about any of us who may be approaching CG from this direction?

It should be OK if I PM you the list on Thursday as well Mumble.

I don't want to change the "rules" about who I will give people's numbers out to, but anyone who has PMed me so far has done so knowing it may be forwarded to anyone who is coming, so unless anyone objects I will also PM the numbers list to anyone who PMs me to say they are coming even if they don't want their number included on the list.

Does that make any sense at all???

I don't know which direction I will be coming from yet

I have a terrible sense of direction, but I do possess a map. EVen so, if anyone can advise me I would appreciate it.

I will be coming in on a train to London Bridge. Looks like I have several choices from there by taking the Jubilee line. Is it easier to walk from Waterloo, or stay on one more stop and cross the river, and walk from Westminster? Or change again and get the Tube to Covent Garden? Or something altogether different since my Tube map is from 2001?

Walk from waterloo - the footbridge is fine and it's quicker. Covent Garden tube is horrible - those lifts!

Yep - sorry - I was trying to be helpful but I do have an awful knack of causing complete confusion to others in doing so! It all makes perfect sense in my own head. Just my head doesn't seem to make much sense to others... One day I shall just learn to keep quite rather than be 'helpful'

If you don't like lifts, you can always climb the stairs at Covent Garden. It's only the equivilent of 15 flights of an office block... My sister did it on Saturday (I, with my brain, took the lift ) - she turned very pink.

The bus driver abandoned the bus on the way home :shame: but apart from that, a perfect day :)
