CarerQuie Report post Posted October 15, 2005 I am interested in the whole debate but don't know how to go about applying pressure.I feel so strongly over the whole thing and am being browbeaten to move my son into mainstream. It will happen OVER MY DEAD BODY. Is there a group I can join who have a special interest in this area?xx

annie Report post Posted October 15, 2005 Those who have the power to make a difference don't seem to have any understanding of ASDs and from them, it just goes further down the line. Some teachers and Heads though (TES Survey) are starting to wake up to the fact that inclusion can be ok if the right support is in place, that's fine, but it will never apply to everybody. There are lots of children like mine that cannot cope with mainstream, but wouldn't have stood a hope in hell of getting into a special school. We've got something that OK for Alex, but there's going to be many more Alex's. What is going to happen to them?? People have to start realising that 'one cap doesn't fit all' and you can't make it fit. Annie XX.
phasmid Report post Posted October 15, 2005 Very interesting. Dissapointing too. One thing in particular stood out in the reply to the issues raised re: Debbie Storey. No mention of steps being taken by LEAs to address the needs of parents with their own SEN issues and how they are to be supported in supporting any children they have with SEN. I cannot break a confidence by saying too much but I have had contact with 1 parent who has AS whose own children have SEN issues. The school refuse to deal with this parent due to the abrubt manner they display towards school staff. They will not speak to them or allow them into school (except at pre-arranged times such as parents evenings etc). There is much more to it. But this parent would be in a position to help this school so much if they only knew it. As they won't communicate with them I guess they will never know the opportunity they are missing.
