katkin Report post Posted February 27, 2006 Hi, after various jobs - none of which ever used my music o level. LSA mainstream ( where i met LorryW) residential care in school for ASD and learning difficulties & challenging behaviour, Home/school Integration Officer (best job title I've ever had!!) now Portage Home Visitor (best job I've ever had - good money too!!! - "just lovin' it" ) Still have never used my music "o" level which just goes to show that ranting at your children to study hard because it will affect their future is pointless. having to do NVQ3 in childcare because gov't says that all must have a childcare qualification. Have to say it is the most puerile, banal and dumbed down course I have ever done will be glad when it's over then might do something more interesting. Love kat
Zemanski Report post Posted February 27, 2006 I never did music o-level but I teach music to AS adults at the moment - can't play a note and they hate my singing (I did do kodaly training for primary kids, mind) Zemanski
katkin Report post Posted February 27, 2006 I might have got music o level but I can't sing or play anything either (did once play piano) Music was, I thought an easy option, it was in fact very hard. Had to analyse pieces of music much as English Literature used to be. But as I say have never used it. Kat

av16 Report post Posted February 27, 2006 I'm a primary school teacher (4th yr) previously 17 yrs in local authority in information & statistics. Did the PGCE because I recognised that no one would look after son in the school holidays so started training as he went into reception. Now have a child in my class who behaves in a very similar way to my son- I recognised his probs straight away- got to Yr3 with everyone thinking he was naughty. It's hard and sometimes I feel I'm failing both but I keep trying!
jomica Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Chair of governors - have been doing it for around 10 years now at one school or another! Thought about teaching, and thought again ........
phasmid Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Oh heck The er....village in Cambridgeshire what we mention I said I knew....Mrs P has just reminded me we know the head of the new primary school there! She's ever so nice (was from a special school so ASD aware as well), so can I suggest we keep her?
zaman Report post Posted February 28, 2006 I'm going to break the chain, as I am not now nor ever have been, a teacher. Or anything like it! I trained as a graphic designer 20 some years ago, and up until last year managed a team of 14 in a production studio. I had to give up work last year when things got too much AS-wise, and I needed to support my son, but financial issues mean that I am having to find something I can do which fits as much as possible around the kids. So I am starting my own design company. It may all come to nothing, but nothing ventured and all that . . . On the second part of the question, I have started a distance learning course on web design, which is something that I am hoping to be able to do within the company. Zemanski Report post Posted February 28, 2006 We don't all have to be education bods - that would be sooooo boring. How about an ASC creative arts community? Oh, and perhaps we could do with some IT specialists, our kids wouldn't survive without the latest gaming technology - I might be able to teach it but I'm damned if I'm going to build and maintain the systems too, that's one of the reasons I left in the first place Dot wants a library and a swimming pool Z
katkin Report post Posted February 28, 2006 I love swimming and have taught to primary age children. I bags the swimming pool then - indoor heated, 25m with added jacuzzi and hydrotherapy please. Love Kat

something vague Report post Posted February 28, 2006 I'm doing the same online course as Helenl53, 2nd Year Uni Course - Cert of Higher Ed in ASD's - Education of Children with ASD's! I've just copy and pasted from hers cos I can never remember what its called! Thats where I met old 'Henny' and where I learned about this site My employment and training history:- Before I had children various classroom assistant jobs, one being in a specialist NAS school - was there when it set up about 25 years ago. 12 year break for family NNEB training, creche worker, youth worker, nursery officer Volunteer Son-rise worker - dont pan me, I know some of you are not impressed by SR but it was the best thing I ever did - totally changed my attitude towards ASD and improved my understanding. Now I'm TA at an Autism centre in a special school, love my job and wouldnt want to do anything else. I dont want to teach and wont go any further after this year with my studies. If you open a new school, make it be in the north please, I'll specialise in SLD/ASD and run some intensive interaction programs for you! I'm also good at face painting - handy for fund raising SV .....Or what about a virtual school
Zemanski Report post Posted February 28, 2006 I don't think it matters where it is - I mean Ireland has some pretty nifty villages just begging for an small ASC arts community, and then there's a castle or two in scotland that might fit the bill or perhaps we could go for teepees in Wales If we're going to stick with that new village in Cambridgeshire I think you'd better warn that nice head, Phas! helenl53 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 I'm old and could do with a lip wax - does that count as old and bearded elder! Oh and the legs could do with a strimmer being run over them
DaisyProudfoot Report post Posted February 28, 2006 My sisters a teacher and my mum's a retired teacher but I'm a journalist. Worked for a small local paper for a couple of years including a stint as woman's page editor and Trade Union Rep before doing freelance stuff for the nationals, then moved over into Press and Public Relations and been there ever since. phasmid Report post Posted February 28, 2006 I'm due out that way in a few weeks I'll have to have a scout around and get the lie of the land...will have to observe the school from a distance in case the head rumbles me! Any special requests for things I need to check they have there already so far: School. Library. Swimming pool. Pub. Post office. What else do we need? (Chinese take away 2 mins down the road + petrol station and small hotel for visiting relatives)

Flora Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Daisy, Cottage Hospital??? Sorted!! I will live in a cottage, I am a trained nurse, and lots of my friends are doctors and nurses and will probably visit lots. That'll do won't it? After all in this AUTopia surely none of us will get seriously ill enough for major surgery??? Lauren
DaisyProudfoot Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Lauren there may be new babies though Can I retrain as a midwife, always fancied myself in that role. My mum says I'm not sympathetic enough though. She says I'll just say: "Oh, will you just stop making that stupid noise and get on and push!"
Flora Report post Posted February 28, 2006 Daisy, that's the best way to do it. We can erect a tent for labouring mums for them to crawl in to and I'm sure cinders could devise some stirrups from one of Suze's old bras and an aptly shaped bit of tree. With your expert encouragment and Matron like support there'll be nothing to it. They'll be popping 'em out like shelling peas Easy peasy!
