  1. Lucas, do you think that Autistic individuals don't get the necessary help they need because they are thought of in this way: or do you think that it is more to do with the fact that the people who get to make the decisions aren't Autistic and have no idea either what is involved and/or what is needed. I have to say my faith in people is low in general and I worry a lot about why things aren't as I feel they should be. The problem is I can never understand the decisions that people make and that depresses me more. I don't get why these people don't want to be more helpful and don't seem to want Autistic individuals to prosper.
  2. Thanks Viper, it does, especially the MIL and FIL. I would have had no idea !?!?
  3. Just picking up on a point that barefoot wend made: Does anyone really believe that society can be changed to deal with ASD individuals effectively? To my mind society is dumb. You have one peron on there own and they can be smart. Put several of these people together and you have a group that can do a lot of good. Multiply that up to the scale of society and I think you end up with mass stupidity. (Thats just my opinion). I can understand to a certain degree where Primine comes from when he talks about: because lets face it attempting to teach that to a number of ASD individuals is far easier than what we all want. When it comes down to it, its not the job of professionals in those kind of jobs to change the world anyway, they can only do what they are involved with. I would love to have a situation where ASD individuals can stim to their hearts content in whatever way and in whatever situation. The problem is we are in the minority and maybe that is something that we have to accept to a certain degree.
  4. What do you mean by this? If you give a specific example we might be able to explain it in terms of how an Aspie (e.g. me) might be seeing it which might then give you a better idea.
  5. At least as far as computer software goes you are completely in your right to make a copy of it so that should the original media get damaged you still have access to the software that you own. In fact originally it was the recommended thing to do and many software applications stated it as the first thing to do before installing the software (in the instruction manual). Now that copying of software and the like is so prolific they do not announce this anymore. I would see absolutely no reason why this same fact wouldn't transfer to DVDs. As long as they are held by you and not distributed then you are complelety in your right to protect your purchase in that way. :-)
  6. The flower icon was added by the site itself. It is called a favicon (favourites icon). Built into the code of the web page they have added a bit of information which says if you bookmark the page then this icon (little picture) should be added with it rather than the bog standard 'e' icon you normally see. Its just a way of personalising the site a bit more and making it stand out in your favourites list. That said they also can appear with multiple visits to a site.
  7. Lucas - Having seen several of your posts containing this kind of information I am in no doubt you have good resources and when you say that some of their figures are inaccurate I feel inclined to believe you. That is not what my post is about. I do think that maybe you could be reading a little more into it with some of the other points though (and obviously this is just my own opinion and no offense is meant by it). For Example: Offensive cannotations in suggesting either of these is a bad thing. I think that maybe rather than there being offensive cannotations as to that this are bad things they are just trying to state in a single line that Autism doesn't just go away and it isn't the fact that if we do nothing then everything will be alright (i.e. action is required to help) and that currently we don't know enough about it (i.e. further research is required to help). I don't see how, looking at it that way, anything wrong with this statement. We don't know enough, we need to know more, we do need to act, we need to raise awareness amongst the public and in my mind their sentence makes that clear in a nutshell. I do agree with you, any suggestion that Autism or people on the Autistic Spectrum are immediately bad / trouble / hassle or anything else is not right and only helps mislead and misinform. As I say this is only my way of looking at it. I would be inclined to think you maybe are taking a slightly more pesimistic view as to the motives of the people / person who wrote it. (Once again, only my own opinion).
  8. It sounds like you need to leave your sister somewhere ;-) What a day. Well done.
  9. I just like the bit where the council spokeswomen is quoted as saying the above. "Could cause offence" - thats an understatement if ever I heard one. I've gotta laugh about it or I'd cry.
  10. Thanks call me jaded. You've been great help already. :-)
  11. I think the main thing here as you have all said is its the meaning and thought process behind the action that is soooooooo different. I suppose they just don't have any experience of that to realise.
  12. Its actually quite surprising how much NT's rely on eye contact to convince them that someone is paying attention. As if intelligent vocal responses or appropriate actions are not enough ;-). I have to say sometimes this whole eye contact thing does become quite stressful simply because I'm paranoid of offending people. Its crazy isn't it. I'm so worried about offending other people that I actively and conciously do something which stresses me even more - attempt to maintain some degree of eye contact. Now if thats not perverse then nothing is.
  13. I don't know anything about Blake, but have seen a few of his poems and they are very impressive. Have a lovely warm feeling to them.
  14. Enjoy it, pretty peaceful and quiet at 8,000ft whilst in freefall (discounting the wind rushing past your ears of course ;-)).
  15. I know what you mean Viper. I have had a recurring dream for a long time (whilst asleep - not as in really want to do it) that I wake up and everyone else is either just gone or is frozen in place. Its always nice that way ;-).
  16. <'> , sorry I have no advice on this but will be thinking of you.
  17. Mad Pixie - ? I don't understand I am afraid. I know the quote is from William Blake's Auguries of Innocence and was used in the Tomb Raider film, sadly where I know it from - big film lover here.
  18. I do like you signature Zemanski - Tomb Raider fan aye.
  19. I just thought it was worth making this point. I have only been using this forum properly for the past week and have to say I have noticed something absolutely fantastic. One of my main issues in this world is that I get very depressed. One of the major causes of my depression is due to the way I see the world and the people and how my interactions with both seem to pick up on bad / pathetic / thoughtless / frustrating / frustrating / upsetting actions by other people. (I find the world very frustrating ;-) ). What I have been so impressed with over the last week is how much you all care, how much you all deal with on a day by day basis. Many of the things you talk about I have no idea about and have no idea how I would even begin to cope with. It would all drive me insane. But the support and welcoming sharing of information here is just brilliant. It has given me a new found faith that there are people out there who are worth knowing and worth being on this planet with. Thanks. You guys are great. :-)
  20. Thanks call me jaded, you keep coming to my rescue.
  21. Thanks mrs q. We appreciate you other choice too. We appreciate you choosing to send it to us lot. :-) Being a bit paranoid and an computer geek (note the old-skool smilies), I do agree with littlenemo - random emails from random people can be a problem. Some people are more malicious than we can imagine. - can't do that with old-skool smilies though. ;-)
  22. I suppose this is aimed at anyone but in particular the moderators. There are several abbreviations I have come across used in the forum that I can't find in the jargon buster. One I know know but the others I am still in the dark about. Would it be worth adding a few more to the jargon buster if people have them. The ones I am not getting are: DS DD GDD ?? Also GF/CF is not on the jargon buster but now I know what that is.
  23. Zemanski, this is a great line. I just wish there were more people around me who would understand it if I used it. ;-)
