Suze Report post Posted September 15, 2006 OH this is great news .Met Al aynsley green the childrens commissioner when we did the nas make school make sense campaign a couple of weeks ago.Several of the families there home educated and were struggling to find schools , he took a real interest in everything we said, and our kids !!He spoke of a family he had talked to during a radio interview. The mother had challenged him to come and see her "situation"..............well he went and met her and her family and spoke of how hard she struggled to get the services etc she needed. This chap took a real vested interest , I hope the media run with this............he also welcomed any families to write to him and tell him of their struggles.............I have his address, and I also told his secretary about this site! jomarie Report post Posted September 16, 2006 It truly made my morning to hear the lead story on Breakfast was the Childrens Commissioner declaring that education provision for Autistic kids is 'shameful & appalling', especially after another demoralising week of chasing up problems with M at school Lets just hope the keep this story in the spotlight & that it doesn't disappear without a trace, as often happens. Brook Report post Posted September 16, 2006 Hi all, this is something we already know but thought I'd post the link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/5350506.stm Brook
CarolJ Report post Posted September 16, 2006 This has to be kept in the public eye - people need to know how vital proper provision is for the wellbeing of autists. Lets hope they continue to keep it highlighted!
nellie Report post Posted September 16, 2006 We keep seeing this issue in the news..........."SEN not fit for purpose" "Schooling for autistics condemned" "Calls for better autism schooling" "School inclusion can be abuse" "Asperger's abuse inquiry pledged" " Make school make sense" ..........and many more, but nothing ever changes. smiley Report post Posted September 16, 2006 (edited) I've been watching - i hope it becomes more than a brief 'headline' at the front of the news before they get onto the football.......... Not sure where to put this.. I've recieved a long letter back from Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP (Secretary of State for Education and Skills). I sent the Make School Make Sense letter/email (couldn't find the thread on forum...) and added some of my own thoughts. It's a nice letter from him...... Full of good intentions..... And the SEN CoP and SEN - Guide for parents and carers was added.......... Then why did i read it and feel more fed up? I hope all this news makes a difference Edited September 16, 2006 by smiley
Brook Report post Posted September 16, 2006 (edited) Well I've just watched this on BBC news 24 and it was HEADLINE NEWS I thought the guy and his son gave a great portrayal of the struggles with education. Hope the message hits home in the right ears!!!!! Brook Edited September 16, 2006 by Brook
jb1964 Report post Posted September 16, 2006 I watched it on Breakfast this morning at about 8.10am - they had a lady on there (at the studio) talking about her difficulties in getting an education for her son but there wasn't a lot really said during the interview, they then later showed an interview with a gentleman at his house with his son which was much better. The report said that they estimated there are currently 90,000 children with ASD and only 8,000 placements in schools with the correct facilities and support - with a 5th of those 90,000 receiving no education at the moment!!! It's only really when figures like that are quoted that the enormity of this problem really hits home. Lets hope there will be some action soon - although in all probability it will be far too late for my daughter as she's already in year 9. Take care, Jb

Yes.Nothing better to add.Too many people talk the talk.I become more and more sceptical as nothing changes for the better as far as I can see.Why put so much effort into getting reports.Anyone could spend just a few days reading posts here and get a very realistic view of how things are.So many people fighting on and on to get what there children should be entitled to.Sorry to be so negative.I never used to be so cynical and stroppy.Karen

Suze Report post Posted September 16, 2006 Well we had a bit of jumping and flapping when my boy caught sight of Al aynsley green on TV "I know him I ,ve met him"!..........running round the kitchen . I did bang on a bit when we had this consultation with him about inclusion simply not working for kids on the spectrum, and I asked the NAS if they had statistics for the number of ASD kids that are home educated ..........they said they did,nt?The statistics brought up in this mornings report were both interesting and shocking.90,000 autistic kids and only 8,000 specialist places . The childrens commissioner openly welcomed the parents he met when we met him to write to him with their views and problems regarding school/education.His offices are at no.1 London Bridge........................
