Ceridrial Report post Posted January 15, 2010 ok, my son has now had a letter home to say that he has been punching a teacher hard in the stomach (thank flip she is not pregnant!) we have decided as parents that we want him in a 'special school' as mainstream is blatantly not working - what do we do now? Has he got a statement? It is my understanding most special schools only take kids with a statement and the LA need to see that a special school will be the best option for your son.Was this the first incident?Has he been excluded? My son has been excluded twice from school because of "aggressive" behaviour(hitting other kids) and he has a two year history of hitting and shouting, yet the school dont seem to think he needs a statement, though I am still persuing a statement and also may send him to a special school,I want to explore all options first as he only just been diagnosed. Ceridrial Report post Posted January 15, 2010 hi he is going through statement now, is on 1 hour a day, on his own, has been excluded 3 or so times for violence....
justine1 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 I am looking into the same thing.I have also said if my son is excluded again I will look into a special school and have two in mind already.Maybe you can start by looking at the schools you have in mind, and prehaps they can also give you advice. You can explain the situation you are in and ask questions. Are there any schools that specialise in ASD where you are or even if they are a bit furthur you may get transport? I am looking at ASD specific as some of the schools may pose other challenges, not that I am ruling it out.I am sure others with more experience will give you more tips.Good luck I am sure you making the right decision. cardiff_mum Report post Posted January 15, 2010 to any parent who wants a statement for their child - you do not have to wait for school/gp/any other 'doc' to do this on the national autistic society website they have a standard letter for you to copy and send to the LEA yourself. you can request the statement without the schools support hope this helps
JsMum Report post Posted January 18, 2010 many special schools also do assesment placements too, for those who do not have a statement, but looking like they jolly well should of done, but didnt get one, so there is assessment placements too, so it could be that the LEA would fund an assessment placement so look into this also. julie1 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 hi he is going through statement now, is on 1 hour a day, on his own, has been excluded 3 or so times for violence.... we are in a similar situation, my daughter is being statemented and is in school for 8 hours a week. this has only just been increased this week she was only doing 1 hour a day, the LA have found some money to fund 1-1 support until easter. Our LA special school are comming to work with her next week to see if she would fit into their school. It is not my choice as i feel she is to clever for MLD school but we will have to wait and see. Kazzen161 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Do not accept a MLD placement if it is not appropriate for your child's needs. Also, look at any school before accepting a placement - special schools vary as much as mainstream.
