KarenT Report post Posted January 27, 2006 I might have mentioned this briefly in another post or I might have just dreamt I did (head like swiss cheese atm) so apologies if I'm repeating myself. At my last SENCo meeting in December I asked for a referral to the Behaviour Support Service and that's been done now. I also asked about involving the Ed Psych for a statutory assessment but was told that they couldn't be involved while another agency is working with J, namely BSS. I just wanted to check with you knowledgeable lot if that sounds right. SENCo said I could do one or the other so it wasn't a case of exploring all other options before bringing in Ed Psych. Does it vary between LEAs? I reckon I might need to ring the EP dept and find out how things work in this area, but could use info and experience from others to back it up. I'm meeting with the SENCo and Head again next Thursday and would like to bring it up then if poss. Ta muchly Karen x
Tez Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Unless this is something unique to your area, which I would doubt, this isn't correct; in my area both are used in conjunction. The functions of the behavioural support team and the EP are different, so why would the use of one rule out getting advice from another? I would suggest giving IPSEA a ring just to clarify the exact legal position on this rather than accepting what any employee within the LEA are saying, sometimes they aren't deliberating lying, just repeating what they've been taught by their employers. elainem Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Hi Karen, sounds as though you are being fobbed off. in any case you can make a parental request for a statutory assessment. Elaine

2pink2blue Report post Posted January 27, 2006 It sounds a bit odd to me. B is currently being seen by BSS (next observation on Tuesday!), school are in contact with the ed psych when needed and we are waiting for Camhs to get back to us. We have also seen the schol dr. as well who said she would refer us to clinical psych but didn't need to as we have already been referred to camhs. OPooh Report post Posted January 27, 2006 The ed pych who taught me gave the impression that to get a clear picture they like to have as much input from as many different professionals as pos. Ed psychs are rare especially atm while they are changing how we qualify = so it's probably down to this - keep fighting we got to see one at last. UltraMum Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Hi Karen, sounds as though you are being fobbed off. My thoughts too ... [can't use up too many resources on one person now, can they?]
jen Report post Posted January 27, 2006 you need to ask the senco where she got the information from. The school can refer the child to as many organisations as the child needs. It all about advising and supporting the child. I would also ask the school governor why is the school stating this as it is discriminating against special needs children. When we ask for a statement the LEA involves everyone! Strange when the boot is on the other foot!!!! Jen
pepper Report post Posted January 27, 2006 can i ask what probably appears to be a really stupid question? i keep reading all about 'ed pysc' and after 2 years dx, i dont know what one is ...u see. I thought it might of been the doctor we were refered to but i roundabout asked 2 days ago at regular appt. and she is a peadatrician at child developement unit' ( asked about that to secretary and got a ton of 'beat around bush explination' ) so in meet mentioned son fancied some help in general at socialising as he always asks me and i do my best - got some garbled chit chat about refering him to a 'sort of group meeting thing' where he could ask questions and get advice.................. does anyone have an idea what the heck son is getting sent to? all doc said is son could try it out and see if liked? im absolutely clueslees ( but wondered if was connected to education pysocolgist etc ) sorry to sound dim xx pep
annie Report post Posted January 27, 2006 Hi Karen, We had the Ed. Physc. and the Behaviour Support Service person together in one meeting that we had. I don't understand why the SENCO would tell you what she has, apart from the fact that you mentioned the words 'statutory assessment' in the same sentence as Ed. Physc.. I would give the EP dept. a ring and ask them what their take is on it. Write down the person's name that you speak to and make a point of letting the SENCO/HEAD know at the meeting that you have called the EP Dept. Hopefully, it will make the school realise that you are not going to believe everything that they tell you. As Tez has said, you can always give IPSEA a ring. Pepper - This is taken from the 'Jargon Buster' (top, right hand corner of the page) Educational Psychologist: Trained teachers with a qualification in psychology employed by the LEA to advise and help teachers and where necessary, to make recommendations to the LEA on providing for the needs of some children. It sounds like a social skills group that your son's paed was talking about. Annie

KarenT Report post Posted January 28, 2006 Thanks guys, very helpful. Will ring IPSEA next week then maybe local LEA as well. Doesn't feel right to me that only one agency at a time can be involved. Karen x
