  1. We always dread first days back. Levi went back to school today.. He was about 40 mins late, as he refused to get out of bed. Trouble started last night - he wouldn't go to bed 'til middnight.. (I stay up with him. Maybe I shouldn't? I guess I'm not a very good role model as I go to bed at 5am.. Anyone have suggestions on how either of us can get some sleep?) But at least he got there and with no temper tantrums either. He even dressed himself I think it went okay. He never likes to talk about it when he gets home, if you ask him how his day was he gets irritable, but he didn't come out in tears, so it can't have been too bad. At least with the nice weather he was able to go on his tramploine when he got home and let off some steam!
  2. Hi I'm an 18 year old aspie. I haven't had my official diagnosis yet, but I have my assessment soon. It got delayed as my old psychologist mistook it for another disorder I love animals too (do you have a fav?) and I also love video games. Being here is great because it's so much easier to talk online than it is face to face with someone and there's no expectations, you just chat when you feel like it
  3. I was diagnosed with depression when I was 14. I was prescribed Prozac - started off on 1 a day and I'm now on 3 a day which works much better for me. I does help my mood, but sometimes I find it does almost make me feel a bit numb. But most of the time it has a really positive effect on me. CAMHS also gave me therapy. Bi-polar Disorder is not one that has ever been suggested.. It's tough sometimes because lots of different disorders can have the same symptoms and resemble each other. When I'm sometimes 'manic' I think it's more a combination of the depression and over-stimulation of my senses.. For example I can get quite angry when I'm in a busy shopping centre, but if my Mum strokes my hair to calm me down I can get quite giggly. It's just a reaction to different things quite suddenly, I don't think it's being bi-polar. Maybe you could try and keep a record of what's happening at the times your sons moods suddenly change - you might see a pattern.
  4. I agree with everything that's been said.. Get her things that she's gonna want to play with I'm 18 and I still love dolls (amongst other things) It's not something I often admit to in public, lol, but I enjoy them and that's the main thing. If it makes her happy, go for it!

    hello

Welcome!! I'm 18 and haven't had a formal diagnosis yet (I currently have an 'unknown psychosis' ), but they're now pretty sure I have Aspergers and I'll be having an assessment done. I also love animals - would love to work with them!!! My best friend is my dog - she's in my display pic And I also have dyspraxia! Hope to see you around often! Kimberley x
  6. Thanks so much to everyone who shared their experiences - it's really helping me understand myself better. My brother (also AS) complains that he's hot more often than cold, so it's interesting to see that it does go both ways. I have a vast array of long-sleeved tops Jb - Thanks for your comment, your daughter sounds quite similar to me. I also have scars from burning myself on a hot water bottle. I put boiling water in it (I know it says you shouldn't ) but I can't feel it otherwise. Unfortunately, it's left scars.. I now try to hold it after I've wrapped it in a blanket. And I don't take baths - water goes cold too quick and makes my skin feel funny
  7. Well, I joined these boards a while ago to find out more about Aspergers in order to help my little brother who was diagnosed last year.. Only to find that in the past few months my psychologist suspects that both myself and my Dad have it too. I've looked into it and I was so shocked that everything that I've struggled with since I started walking and talking is the same for other people on the autistic spectrum. It even explains physical problems that the doctor hasn't been able to work out such as why I never know when to use the toilet until it's too late And why I had an extreme phobia of food and was hospitilised a few years ago. I guess I just didn't see it, because although my little brother and I are similar, he's far more aggressive than me and there are just differences - e.g I like to rock myself when I'm stressed, where as he fiddles with his hair, I have severe OCD, where as he shows no signs of it. Maybe I was just in denial? But I'll be having an assessment soon and I'm also having an EEG because I've been convulsing in my sleep and waking up soaked in sweat and a sore tongue where I've bitten it. Epilepsy, maybe? It only happens in my sleep though.. Anyway, I wanted to ask if sensitivity to temperature is common or not? Because it doesn't affect my brother.. But I am always cold! I'm wrapped up when everyone else is in shorts and t-shirts (again as a child, I was sent to the doctor because of this and they could find no cause). I've also suffered a number of burns over the years because somehow I didn't feel it So I have to be careful with the kettle and in the shower, ect. Although my Mum usually does these things for me anyway. Just wondered if anyone can share any experiences
  8. This is always a big part of my day.. I always considered it to be part of my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  9. I can sympathise.. I think I'm gonna try out some of these suggestions. I'm so forgetful. I'm 18 now, so I finally convinced my mum that I'd be fine going shopping. I went.. And came home without my shopping

    Hello

    Welcome Sally!!
  14. I have one.. I was at the zoo a couple of weeks ago. In the distance (I thought) I saw a Mama hippo with her baby. I was so excited! And then was informed that it was just a big photograph on a board Haha.
  15. I'd say it's all part of his current obsession. Levi's obsession is with video games, but he goes through phases of which ones he likes best. And he'll re-enact the games over and over pretending he's the character in the game
  16. Hiya I'm 18 and was diagnosed with a schizophrenic sprectrum disorder by CAMHS. They've now changed their mind and suspect I may have Aspergers, so I'm going to have a reassessment done. My little brother (also 7) was diagnosed in December with Aspergers and we believe my Dad has it too.
  17. Hiya I just turned 18 (I'm also in Bedfordshire) and I don't work.. I think it depends on how your daughter feels.. At the moment I know that I wouldn't be able to work. I was home-schooled and never went to college.. I have issues with being out of the house for longer than a couple of hours and a lot of other problems on top of that. I'm not even bothering to look into getting a job just yet - not until I get myself sorted a bit - as I know that I'm not going to be a reliable worker. I get a DVLA allowance every month and this week I've also joined a group named Mind. They work with people with mental disabilities to help them get back into society, help them with careers, ect. The one I go to is in Hemel Hempstead. http://www.hertsmindnetwork.org/ I've also been wanting to drive. I figured I'm going to start by just learning everything I need to know for the written test and then see how it goes from there. I hope that's of some help!
  18. I think quite a lot of us have been in this situation The thing is that they're entirely innocent about it all. This has happened to us on more than one occasion. One that stands out in my mind was when we were shopping and passed a large man. Levi said very loudly, "Wow! That man is huuuge!!!" And then I try to explain to Levi that it's not polite to make observations like that about people; which in turn only confused him because as he said, "It's true!"

    FLIES

Aww, bless her.. Levi doesn't like bugs. Wasps are his worst fear though. He was stung very badly last year and now he screams when he sees one. We got him a fly swat! And he takes it in the garden with him when he wants to play on the trampoline and he seems quite happy. I think it's made him feel safer and more in control of the situation.
  20. This literally brought tears to my eyes. Kids can be so cruel. I was always teased at school for being 'weird' and I was laughed at and deliberately made to feel bad. It still hurts me just thinking about some of the things that were said. It's a big worry for me now that Levi is getting older. I really don't want other kids to make things unpleasant for him or to knock his confidence. It wasn't toooo bad when I was little, but when I got to middle school, I suppose my 'quirks' became more apparent. Give your lad a hug for me - AS kids rule!!!
