  1. Plenty of snow here in London. Went out to do some "therapy"...with my camera of course
  2. You should get into a regular sleep cycle and go to bed/.get up around the same time every day. Everybody's sleep needs are different but usually 7 - 8 hours of good quality sleep is the norm. Apart from sleeping, the body needs the "downtime" to repair and rejuvinate itself. Try not to drink caffeine during the evening and don't go on computer etc before going to sleep. Reading before sleep is usually good so the mind/body winds down.
  3. Love mood diaries - but I only tend to write down the low moods...
  4. The BBC's article states autism in its title and then "higher functioning autism" later on when this should have been made clear in the title. It's very misleading and will get people's hopes up But as I'm finding out, the real experts (on this forum) are right as they either live with the condition or have children with the condition and therefore see this every day. Merry beat me me to it...I am learning how to be/act normal, I am learning more about the condition (and myself) everyday from reading, watching and listening - I just wished I found out 30 years ago... So yes, behaviour is learned/mimicked so that people with AS can get through life. But the person will still have AS no matter what - it may just be he/she does not show any outward signs in public. But coping/learning requires a lot of energy and I guess people with AS will burn out faster than their NT counterparts. It would have been nice for the BBC to have provided links to this research...
  5. Hi Willow-Tree You will always get "dislikes" on YouTube and for many, these are usually few and far between. I know it's easy for me to say but - don't let the odd negative comment get you down. I loved your book and have watched a few of your blogs on YouTube. It is just brilliant that a young, talented girl like you can stand up and do all this. Of course, none of this existed when I grew up. You are sending out a powerful message to young people, these are people who can relate to what you feel and write. I have come to understand than anxiety, depressive thoughts and the constant need to question oneself is part of AS. This is something you love doing. It's all about demand so if people want this and that, then you have to follow through. Keep up the excellent work!
  6. Yesterday whilst looking up stuff on YouTube, I discovered something new called "Binaural Beats" which apparently is a science and used in meditation, yoga etc. I find this quite fascinating and some of the stuff is rather calming. Does anyone listen to this and find it useful? I wonder if it has been used to try and calm children with ADHD
  7. Well....what an interesting question but I might be at risk of alienating one or two peo, Mple here. When I first joined the forum, LancsLad, Darkshine and Warrior were the first three that made me feel welcome. Warrior for his amusement, "off the wall" characteristics, yet he had a serious side to him and kept the forum alive. LancsLad for his wisdom and Darkshine for his dryness, honesty and wisdom. Then there was SmileyK who made me realise just how much AS can be depressive and unappreciative to those not on the spectrum, Merry for her interesting stories and having a hubby rather like me, Lyndalou who also posts good advice and has a husband with an obsessive interest not too dissimilar to my own. Then there's Sa Skimrade for his blatant honesty and always one for a good healthy argument and who has been through the mangle like me. HannahUCL whom I've met personally and really looking forward to seeing her work, Willow-Hope for her most inspirational book that I have read...I could go on... and apologise if I have missed anyone out. Basically I have learnt something from everyone on this forum and hope to make more friends....
  8. I know I work hard as my manager has always told me so and other people have not complained. But since a new person has started, she comes in late, has had the equivalent of 7 days sick within the first month and this is her first job... I have been told "I'm not pulling my weight".... How sick does that make me feel?
  9. Yes...and can we have a list of all the present mods please?
  10. Hi yes I never had friends and JackieJacob makes some good points (but which didn't work for me). But don't let this put you off, girls are more gregarious and (most importantly) more accepting than boys. I tried evening classes when I was younger but these did not work for me, my main interest is solitary so no chance of making friends there. But growing up, during my 20s and 30s etc - I had absolutely no idea then I had Aspergers: I always knew something wasn't right, but could not understand why I didn't make friends etc. This is why I found this forum as I found some cybermates - although perhaps "some" is a bit of a misnomer now... I'm hoping to find more...
  11. Hi Marcia Reducing stress is a major factor in reducing sensory overload...plus a good diet, plenty of sleep and reduction of caffeine. Ear plugs are ok to an extent but they may not block out all frequencies What kinds of noises stresses you out the most?
  12. Exactly, if you don't like the subject/thread...don't read it. I'm sorry to come in on this Matzoball as it's your thread but this whole thing is getting completely out of hand and I'm getting a bit a**ed by it now as I'm sure you are. I don't see the point of all this personal griping and apportioning of blame. Why can't everybody chill and move on?
  13. On-line shopping has been a boon for me...but not for the reasons about not liking town centres.
  14. Oakers...perhaps you're right. I don't often get a good night's sleep and no matter what time I go to bed (whether it be midnight, 10pm or even 8pm(!)), I still wake up unrested in the morning. And I definately know when I've ground my teeth as I have jaw-ache.
  15. I grind my teeth in my sleep...but I thought teeth grinding was due mainly to stress but since I have found out this is another stimming "thing". But then, why does one do it in their sleep? Unless one is having a bad dream?
  16. Hi Merry I have to confess, I'm rather a "messy man" too. The problem is, I never used to be. My lodgings always used to be tidy but then I suppose I did not have much to my name. Although I've only myself to blame, it seems coincidental since I met my wife and acquired more things, I let things slip and the house is in a constant state of mess - yet it is "organized mess" - I generally know where everything is. But since my daughter was born (she's now 13), she has never - ever kept her room tidy and I suspect this is down to dyspraxic traits rather than following her father - as mum is very tidy! For the last 6 months, my wife has been pestering to decorate - which means clearing out the main room we live in (most of it with my stuff!) and this has crossed my comfort zone. I don't like change and to me, this is a huge upheaval. It means moving the telly, the computer - literally everything out of our living space (we occupy the upper floor of her father's house) so have our own living room/bedroom etc. Although she has given me notice (bless her!), I need constant reminding so I have started (in small doses) working on little areas at a time clearing rubbish or consolodating elsewhere. We both work full time long hours and so the last thing we want to do when we get home is housework! Especially for me as I don't get home until 8- 9pm.
  17. I have been away from the computer for a couple of days and wondered if I returned to the right forum. It seems to be in complete disarray at the moment as key members have given notice to leave. What’s going on guys? Have you really, really thought this through? You guys befriended me from the start and I have just kinda started to get to get to know you through your posting style etc and kept this forum alive. There are some others on here that I would like to call my friends too. But come on guys, at least reconsider your decisions. If you have really, really…really thought this through and are leaving purely for other reasons, personal etc…then so be it but that’s three personal friends lost in an instant. You guys have really given good advice since my time on here. You got to be getting out of here for the right reasons rather than a knee-jerk reaction to bad press. I agree that there should be at least some structure in any forum but also the freedom to speak out. I accept that perhaps some people feel they are unable to do this so what is the point of a forum otherwise? But I'm not one for office politics and much of this is none of my business. But I am personally very saddened, and rather cheesed off that for me at least, the first 3 people to welcome me onto this forum have decided to jack it all in.
  18. Merry Just a couple of final thoughts then on this matter.... The choice of whether to vaccinate or not is a personal one. Whether you have aspergers or not makes no difference in my view....you must look into this properly in order to make an informed choice. Read widely on the empirical evidence, listen to other parents and go with your gut instinct. Finally, you would normally look at the ingredients of what you buy in the shop (particularly if you/others have any food sensitivities) - the same goes for vaccines...look at the ingredients - often you can look these up or contact the relevant manufacturer. Feel free to PM me if you want to continue this away from this topic...
  19. Lyndalou, I'm really sorry to hear about your parents. Something so unnecessary when one expects to trust the "experts" I may be completely off the mark here but I do not buy "faulty batch". To me this sounds like an excuse/cover up. It has cost your dad dearly and this is unforgivable. Pharmaceutical companies and politicians do not care about the welfare of the public. The swine flu was a complete hoax IMO but sadly I can't prove it. And there's another vaccine being touted towards a certain sector of teenagers which I won't mention here but the whole thing is a scam. I went to a school talk about it given by a public health professor and I knew he was lying because he felt so uncomfortable with some of the questions I had to ask. Plus he could not produce any credible scientific data to back up his sales pitch. I don't wish to sound big-headed but the whole thing sickens me. People can write to the relevant manufacturers and get the ingredients - they're a real eye opener....
  20. Here's an example in my case. I work in a profession where we are expected to get flu vaccination each year. But aren't vaccines supposed to give immunity for life?. Not the flu vaccine. We are told that the efficacy of it wears off wihin a year, hence the reason people have to have the vaccine. And how can the current strain be predicted for the upcoming season each year when manufacture is in the spring? Everybody I work with gets the flu vaccine each year - and they fall ill every year. This is enough to put me off.
  21. Depends on my mood. Usually I'm happy to slob around in jeans/tee-shirt and either a velvety type jacket for the autumn or lambswool jumpers for the winter. And for work, it's a shirt and tie/suit job. I don't go with fashion. I'm not a teenager. And perhaps I'm too old to wear Converse shoes/trainers. But I don't "do" trainers, so its either Converse or shoes. I generally go with what I'm comfortable with. If I'm slobbing it doing photography etc, I wear converse but if I'm going shopping with the family (or such like) I wear shoes. I dress to suit my mood. If I'm going through periods of depression, then generally I don't care what I look like and I probably come across as a scruffy git who should know better at my age. But if I'm not depressed, then I take pride in my appearance and can even make myself look smart in jeans etc
  22. Hi Hannah Hope all is well with you. Is this the survey we did last year or is it a different one?
  23. I will step forward and disagree to (some) vaccinations. And I disagree strongly with a lot of polical policy regarding mass vaccination. I do not buy herd immunity And there I shall leave it...
