  1. Hi I know it is expensive so would be worthwhile finding out how much it would cost for the area you need to cover at home when considering it.Karen
  2. Dear Jomarie <'> <'> <'> I don't know what to say other than don't give up.You have a lot to manage just now. I know that PND is hard work on its own.Stick with the counselling as you need to look after yourself in order to help the toddlers plus M.It is not easy but the mountains do become possible to climb just don't expect to climb them all at once.Hope it helps to know there are others listening. <'> Karen A.
  3. lisa good news but don't get too hopeful re having anything in place for end of Sep.The last submissions for Ben were sent in a couple of weeks ago.Now with- EP who will do draft to go to panel to agree draft and decide funding - to return to us to decide if we agree to issue statement........SALT IS TALKING ABOUT AN 8 WEEK MEATING 8 weeks after statement to plan who will do what -so we may get action by christmas. But perhaps you will get things done quicker. I had a chat with HT on Fri explained it is difficult to plan when we will find out on Mon of last week of term re statement and teacher for year 4-giving us 4 days to liaise with teacher and orientate Ben.

    clingy

Hi Lisa .Ben[8 asperger traits]also demands lots of individual attention he is anxious when alone in bed, toilet, bath. We are slowly working to make him less dependant on us Eg we look in on him every 15 mins to settle him at night rather than staying, sit outside the bathroom rather than beside him.We will see if this works Karen A.
  5. Hi I have read about similar situations in children with ASD who have sensory integration differences. It is as though what goes on in vision influences hearing. My son Ben has asperger syndrome and SIDS [sensitive to sound, sensations ,lights, busy environments]He finds the activity in a busy classroom difficult. It sounds as though J has found his own way to cope with school which is great.Ben's SIDS vary depending on tiredness, illness etc and what bothers him one day may not be a problem the next. This is not unusual. There are some good books on SIDS with more info.Hope this helps-Karen A
  6. Dear Linda my son has recently Dx with some aspergers traits. In the process of his psychiatric assessments we looked at my family mental health history. My father died 20 years ago and mum died 18 months ago so any thoughts are based on memories. However I think dad probably had aspegers traits also-caring man but loner, structured routine at home++,little emotional expression.I have also asked questions about myself.I have a very complicated mental health history and have had years of psychotherapy so it would be a challenge for anyone to decide if I have aspergers traits. All I can say is that I see a lot of myself in my son.My husband has needed patience, comitment and love ++ in order to remain with me.I know I have been obsessive, have liked routine and have some "ecentricities".On reading the literature it appears increasingly common for individuals themselves or family members to ? Aspergers in adults so you are not alone. As others have said there are some good books in which people share their stories. As far as I can gather it may be difficult to obtain a diagnosis as an adult as this is a new area for specialists however there people around asking similar questions .I hope this and the other posts provide some support and at least it lets you know you are not alone-I wish there were easy answers to what is a difficult situation for you. <'> Karen

    Writing

HI My son has DCD,he also has problems with handwriting. He now uses a small electric typewriter called an Alphasmart.Although this does not have voice recognition he finds typing much easier than handwriting as he does not need to worry about pencil grip.He had been becoming very frustrated when trying to write and is now less negative about literacy. He is also confident in using the PC which is useful. The school were able to obtain the Alphasmart on lone for him.Due to difficulties with fine motor skills we do not expect B to be able to write fluently enough to keep up in secondry school so thought it better that he gained keyboard skills ASAP.This has been supported bY OT,EPand the paediatrician in submissions for stat assessment for B.Hpoe this info is helpful.
  11. Hi ,I have not got personal experience but know there are lots of records in ASD literature of children having painful conditions such as appendicitis and carers not realising because the child does not show they are experiencing pain.

    Introductions!!

Hi my name is Karen I live in London I have one son B who is 8 and has DCD with aspergers traits -he is very bright with a vast vocabulary but can be exhausting to parent. We are in the limbo land of obtaining a statutary assessment for him which has become my new job.I also have a son Joel who is 10 and a great husband.A mum told me about this forum and I have found it really helpful. You appear to be a great bunch of people so thought I would identify myself instead of hiding on the edge.Thnks Karen.
