bid Report post Posted August 9, 2007 (edited) Thanks, guys <'> Flozza...my DH says he thinks my detailed explanation of the sparklies I was wearing might have had something to do with it Apparently I was bouncing, making a funny noise and clapping my hands when describing how sparklie sandals make me feel Just glad I'm not waiting for the appointment any more I've been feeling for weeks My mum and DH were brilliant, so <'> <'> to them Bid, aka The Lipstick Aspie Edited August 9, 2007 by bid

JsMum Report post Posted August 9, 2007 wow how does it feel to have it confirmed now,? when did yuo start to suspect that you had AS? do you look back to your childhood and wonder how you got throw the amount of stuff you have to go throw, as a NT child its difficult enough but having AS or additional needs then its even more so? What does the AS Diagnosis mean for your future? employment ect... Can I say in the nicest way congratulations as it must be a realiefe in some ways if it has been suspected, I dont understand the lipstick but get a feeling that has something to do with your diagnosis. All the best for a more understanding future, hopefully. JsMum
bid Report post Posted August 9, 2007 Wellllllllllllll... I had always felt 'on the outside looking in' from a child, and really struggled with loads and loads of things, but I thought it was because I was inadequate, abnormal and dysfunctional. I got through a lot by copying people and 'pretending to be normal'. I was also very quiet and no bother at school, plus no learning problems. It was my youngest DS's paediatrician who first suggested an assessment, about 2 years ago (in that now infamous exchange of 'Your son is fine Mrs H, but have you thought...' ). I had started to wonder myself around then...before my life was so frantic with my eldest DS that for years and years I really didn't think about 'me' at all, only once he went to residesi. The paed. then wrote to my GP, and about a year later I was finally seen by my local mental health team, which was a disaster (I just wanted a label, I couldn't have AS because I cared about what people think, etc, etc), but in the report it did say I presented with some traits of ASD. My very supportive GP then referred me on to Simon Baron-Cohen's specialist team for adult dx. Don't think it will affect work My line manager already knew I had been referred, and I was still promoted to Team Leader at the end of the summer term I work in a residesi school, and the rest of the staff are all quite non-mainstream, IYKWIM, so I fit in OK I think. I will tell my line manager about the dx in September, but hopefully everything will be OK. Lipstick Aspies came from Lipstick Lesbians...you know, glam lesbians instead of the stereotype?? So sort of the same thing But not meant to offend anyone with AS who doesn't like sparklies and lipstick, it was just a bit of fun At the mo I'm just relieved the appointment isn't hanging over me anymore as I've been worrying about it for weeks. JsMum Report post Posted August 9, 2007 Thank you Bid for your little overview of how you came to be finally diagnosed and I must admit I did a little giggle when the pead suggested that your son is fine but on the other hand Id like to get you assessed!!! for 2 years down the road he was right, you can let him know now that he had the right inclination now. So sad to hear that your adult cams was pants, why they exist I really dont know, they are no use at all, except if you like the roundabout ride. It sounds like in some way the work found you rather than you found the work in your job, I hope it is excepted by the sounds of it they will and be more surprised if the answer was your NT, I didnt find the lipstick bit offending at all, just that I didnt get the intentions of the sentance, sorry I made it sound like I was affended I wasnt at all. Alyth_mum Report post Posted August 10, 2007 You are obviously relieved to have it confirmed.... well done you. Often wonder if it's a help to have dx as an adult - we are all 99% certain my DH has Aspergers. However there is no way he would be prepared to be assessed. I also wonder about myself - I know I have Auditory Processing Disorder - this was dx in 1997. If I'm not dsypraxic then no-one is. I have spent my whole life being an outsider : I even had councilling when I was in my mid-20's becase I didn't know who I was or where I belonged (Geographically). Go out and Celebrate - go and buy a 'sparklie' to commenerate(?sp) the day. Louise
