BusyLizzie100 Report post Posted July 16, 2009 No, we haven't won the lottery but it feels like the next best thing... Haven't posted for ages because I've had two statutory assessments on the go and one appeal to prepare for, which has taken months of hard work and but it's finally paid off - DS2 is leaving mainstream tomorrow and going to an autism-specific school from September AND DS1 is starting at the secondary school of our choice in September with a Statement ... so I'm feeling just a little giddy! It hasn't been without a fight or two or three or four and I'm still appealing over the content and provision of DS1's Statement, but things are definitely looking up!!! We've managed to prove the 'experts' wrong on two major counts: that you can't move from mainstream into a specialist setting without going to tribunal (which is what we were told re DS2) and that DS1 will never get a Statement because he's too bright and achieving well academically. And even though we're still appealing over DS1's statement, I'm hopeful that will go OK since all the necessary information is in the reports attached in the appendices of the statement, it's just that the LA has seen fit to ignore it, including the advice of the LA's own senior specialist Ed Psych. So forgive me if I give myself a huge pat on the back and do a bit more of this: and probably far too much of resulting in Most of all I want to pass good vibes on to everyone else who's struggling with the education system... good things can happen, so don't stop fighting and keep at it... and many thanks to everyone here who's helped me and supported me in the past, especially Kathryn, my education guru Lizzie xx

bid Report post Posted July 16, 2009 WELL DONE!! I think we're the same LA...they don't half tell some whoppers! My son went from mainstream to a residential special school for AS without going to tribunal...and I think back then they told Kathryn that there weren't any autistic children in our LA placed out of county So pleased for you all <'> Bid

Kathryn Report post Posted July 16, 2009 <'> Did you ever think you'd see the day?! Guru?? No - just someone else who's been up to their neck in the same ######. Our LEA - don't you just love 'em. The cast may have changed over the years but the script remains the same. Ho hum. Good for you, Lizzie. and best of luck for the continuing battle with DS1's statement. Having one of these for you, K x

There is real pleasure to be had in proving the LA/professionals are wrong (or liars!). Well done - I hope all goes well and you can have a rest now. Athena Report post Posted July 16, 2009 Great news!! Inspires me to stick to my guns for DD's educational needs. Just staring out really, with LEA agreeing to assess (Yes!!!) but your story does give me hope that I can get a proper education for DD. Well done for all your hard work and tenacity, so glad that it was all worthwhile. (Do feel free to share any advice with a "newbie" like me!)

BusyLizzie100 Report post Posted July 16, 2009 Thanks so much for all your lovely replies, it's so lovely to share good news with people who really understand what it all means... Tomorrow is the last day for both boys in their current settings, I have a feeling I might get a bit emotional but I'm soooooooooooo angry, too, because of all the battle we have fought and all the ignorance we have come across. will try to stay calm... Currently enjoying , will probably too jaded tomorrow to cause a stink!!!! Lizzie
