whats an IEP?

Recommended Posts

Hi Hev (oh awarded one :P ),

This is from the 'jargon buster'

Individual Education Plan (IEP): the IEP is a planning, teaching and reviewing tool. It is a working document for all teaching staff recording key short-term targets and strategies for an individual pupil that are different from or additional to those in place for the rest of the group or class. The interventions will be provided under Early Years Action, Early Years Action Plus, School Action, School Action Plus and statements of SEN.

and SENCO

SEN Coordinator (SENCO): member of staff of a school or early education setting who has responsibility for coordinating SEN provision within that school.

my ds has an iep its a sheet of paper which states what phase your child is on:school action, school action plus(my ds) then it goes statement.

then you have a list normally three of targets:

my ds is counting to 20

learning certain letters of the alphabet

(on his is five letters)

then thelast one is peoples emotions and the impact of his actions on them.

then they list the resources they are using to achieve these targets.ie whitboard, flashcards etc

then the list of achiements.

then it is signed by both class teacher and senco

it also has the date in which it will be reviewed.

with my ds he also has a speech/language plan running along side.

hope this helps you.you will only need an iep if your child has learning diffculties but i would inquire if your child needs one.

The title of this thread made me chuckle. 'What's an IEP'... for a minute there I thought my son's HT/SENCo had joined this forum :P

No Phas - if it was the school where Darkys kids and my son went to - then the question would be valid

The SENCO does not believe in them and prefers one to one verbal communication.

That will be herself talking to her alter ego

Best wishes

Daisy, at least you have an IEP to review!!! After 2 years at this school my son has had one IEP, hastely scribbled out for my signature 2 days before the OFSTED visit in July 2004. I was a bit green then, otherwise I would have refused to sign it. :P
