Depression, Mental Health and Crisis Support 06/04/2017

Depression, Mental Health and Crisis Support Depression and other mental health difficulties are common amongst people on the autistic spectrum and their carers. People who are affected by general mental health difficulties are encouraged to receive and share information, support and advice with other forum members, though it is important to point out that this exchange of information is generally based on personal experience and opinions, and is not a substitute for professional medical help. There is a list of sources of mental health support here: Mental Health Resources link People may experience a more serious crisis with their mental health and need urgent medical assistance and advice. However well intentioned, this is not an area of support that the forum can or should be attempting to offer and we would urge members who are feeling at risk of self-harm or suicide to contact either their own GP/health centre, or if out of hours contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or to call emergency services 999. We want to reassure members that they have our full support in offering and seeking advice and information on general mental health issues. Members asking for information in order to help a person in their care are seeking to empower both themselves and those they represent, and we would naturally welcome any such dialogue on the forum. However, any posts which are deemed to contain inference of personal intent to self-harm and/or suicide will be removed from the forum and that person will be contacted via the pm system with advice on where to seek appropriate help. In addition to the post being removed, if a forum member is deemed to indicate an immediate risk to themselves, and are unable to be contacted via the pm system, the moderating team will take steps to ensure that person's safety. This may involve breaking previous confidentiality agreements and/or contacting the emergency services on that person's behalf. Sometimes posts referring to self-harm do not indicate an immediate risk, but they may contain material which others find inappropriate or distressing. This type of post will also be removed from the public forum at the moderator's/administrator's discretion, considering the forum user base as a whole. If any member receives a PM indicating an immediate risk and is not in a position (or does not want) to intervene, they should forward the PM to the moderating team, who will deal with the disclosure in accordance with the above guidelines. We trust all members will appreciate the reasoning behind these guidelines, and our intention to urge any member struggling with suicidal feelings to seek and receive approproiate support from trained and experienced professional resources. The forum guidelines have been updated to reflect the above. Regards, The mod/admin team

1. melatonin purchase in UK

after over 2 years of dx manchster nhs are still well behind the curve.can't get melatonin on nhs,its banned, cos they reckon its £800 a month!still for when my sleep synch goes out........I drink a bottle of cider to get me to sleep.I've been a non drinker all my life but i've learnt the nhs will screw you up with drugs designed to contain severe mental illness so beware.you'll find most of your problems will be to do with side effects of drugs than the actuall asd.so glad my parents were'nt middle class because I would be addicted to nhs drugs by now (and very likely dead) and even further removed from understanding my asd problems. Melatonin,in short amounts, exercise and diet.....is all many of us need.whats startling is how many proffesional (sick) think that asd problems are all 'in the mind'.Its no wonder the first recourse is usually for mental health drugs, and mainly for containment of 'symptoms' so the asd'rs family can contain the behaviours.
2. shame many of us are too ###### poor to be able to travel, let alone get a support worker...........
3. The Danger of Late Diagnosis

health service/support is almost non existant.i get a smidge of help from the mental\ health teem who know i'm not looney, but you can see it on their little faces ,wishimg had a 'mental' illness.now that would open any help up easier.end of the day,be gratefull you can walk, and remember the nhs is under the delusion that asd etc is a 'mental' in 'the mind/perception' problem.....'treatable' with mind drugs.and they are mostly unaware that diet and enviroment play a crucial role.seems a lot of the drugs are about normalising an asd'rs behaviour for the benefit of their families. NHS intervention can often prove fatal.....with little resources and knowledgbase they dump asd'rs on lock up mental health wards.......resulting in more suffering and misunderstanding...... Personally i think it's a biologicall war, like racism. we will be tolerated,as long as the nt's can dictate to us and be marvelled by our sentinent cretive bomkerness in many areas of culture and industry...and as long as we socially behave and don't have any eppys in shopping centres or use violent languauge)l......but the nhs is a no no......a` cornocopia of multi coloured drugs...each one based on promises.in desperation its easy to find yourself having a much harder time with sleep/mood/awareness when your body is adjusting to masses of neuro chemicals from the nhs........ 'm 50 next month, diagniosis over 2 years ago, lifes been hard, yeah yeah but I realise that if I'd been diagnosed at 13,when i was dumped in care, then my life could have been made far worse by proffesionals, and family who would of easily filled me full of pills and tried to turn me into a great mathematician, musical prodigy etc with a deluded and incomplete awareness of asd.
4. We need help!

just moving house can be stressfull and night owl asd'rs can take some time to get used to the noises.tiring him out, makingsure he's up in the morning and feeding him in the evening can help.I'd try lavender/hops on the pillow and (if poss) makehim drink a smakk cp of chamomile tea before sleep. remember that melatonin is an aid to a good sleep pattern, not a sleep tranq/pill. dont let em doze in the day.
5. as there are visual effects ,perceptual and physical, like light sensitivity then the differences in the eye might be more to do with contrast/iris/colour areas, The eyes are used for diagnosis of many illnessness,as well as sight problems. I've found my tinted specs wonderfull on my anxiety,i'm long sighted.
6. Empathy is working today

I've found this repeated misconception, that autisism etal all disposes the person to lack of empathy or emotional feelings. This com es I think from the misinterpretations of expected 'neurtypical ' behaviour. a big difficulty can be expressing emotions and relating with cognitive skills/body language, not being without empathy or feeling ,for self or others. there's some psychological similarities with some types of mental illness,in that much anxiety/distress can be caused by hypersensitivity to enviroment.so people WITH feelings tend to suffer more than those who are 'not very in touch' with their feelings
7. Advantages of diagnosis?

I feel the same as you prof about people i've offended but looking back on the whole they are people who've constantly abused me ,lied about me and took all my money and property.from where i'm standing my diagnosis is just another useful tool for my relatives to steal more from me.ask darkshine succintly put 'are you rich' ....as regards cbt because the nhs are mostly a loads of drug pushers who are in fact abusing people with asd/autisim/aspies bevcasue its much cheaper.i'm prpeared to die for what i beleive in because if i don't do the things i plan to do then their will be no help for one of my daughters and others ,becasue were working class and don't live in a health aithority that 'does' autisim. Dr porter rochdales most eminent shrink 'we don't do autisim ' Top Cognitive shrink at North manchester general hostpital 'manchester does'nt recongise autisim' death to the unbeleivers!!!if only mummy and daddy lived in hale barns or hebden bridge or totnes, economics and class is nearly everything.
8. Hello

what foods do you like/dislike?Do you like having baths and swimming?Hoe do you get on with fashion and clothes?Do you sleep well? A lot of symptoms of asd/spergers/autisim can be very easily be interpretted other ways, like teenagerdom and social anxiety. Its normal for your head to be running with wild ideas, your young and less blinkerd.Search the subject a bit more for a few more months and if you still fell the same then ask your parents to take you to the GP.There's a lot of pressure and stress for young people at your age .
9. melatonin purchase in UK

I totally agree with Cmuir ......some Gp's haven't a clue with melatonin and think it gets abused for 'fake tans'.it is available online for jetlag and sleep disorders without prescription.Go back to your Gp and explain it to him/her again and if its still a no no then just vote with your feet and go to another Gp.The irony is that they'd probably have no problem prescribing serious and strong mental health drugs. My Gp has precribed it for me but has made it plain that it should be used to re enable my natural melatonin/sleep rythem and not taken all the time but just used to re synch me.i would'nt reccommend the web for ANY drugs/potions as you don't know what your getting ,in terms of purity and dosage.
10. Why Don't I Feel As If I Don't Have Asperger's

Like many of the above posters have said don't focus too much on 'definitions of accepted' ASD/aspy behaviour.one of the great difficulties is that ASD's have such a wide range of symptoms/ways of being that its almost impossible to make a fast assesment, combined with the fact that many traditional accepted mistakes are very alive and well, like maths genious, obssesive behaviour, monotone voice ,no laughing etc......just be yourself and don't measure yourself against definitions.it's obviously complicated by the individual bias's.I saw southpark last week, they did one about 'aspergers',it was obviously a spoof and expressed a far more enlightning approach/understanding than most local health authorities who think autisim/asd/aspergers etc is one notch off shizophrenia and bi polar personality 'disorder'.Be yourself.and dont gamble unless your good with numbers.
11. School wants me to sign disclaimer

on the casual, it seems like your an asd job and so is your kid!!sift through it all and you'll undertsand your problems, cheers philipo x
12. To be or not to be... Asperger's

Logically a 'cure' is somthing for an illness.the value judgment for illness change with time and culture.Baddad makes the clear point when quoting 'i think therefore i am'.identifying with a (d)isability can be productive for people in late diagnosis,as they can reconcile and understand the influences that have made their past history.but fully blaming past events on asd/aspie/auty's is really a negation of the present ,and our personal power to change and steer our lives.victimhood is'nt a happy place, nor a positive one. what if there was a black man who always wonderd why life happend as it happend without him understanding why it went pear shaped all the time, only to wake up one day and then have an awareness of skin colour and racial discrimination for the first time in his life?would he want to be black still?or take a pill to make him a different shade? My opinion is that its a socially projected disability, caused by cultural ignorance and intolerance and fear of difference,it has a biological foundation,so does ginger hair, but its not an illness. obesity is considerd an illness and a disabilty by some, but only because of the tolerance for overeating an unhealthy lifestyles9cultural projections). We could 'cure obesity' by making people do exercise and limiting their food intake but would be called 'facist' for doing so as these people have 'human rights',but it could be the thin end of the wedge.once scientists/doctors find genes for dyslexia and autisim and a hundred other things then it wont be long before you may be able to terminate pregnancies,in the name of 'health' of course. The ultimate end to this kind of thinking will probably bbe a human race so similair in biology that it gets wiped out by a minor flu virus that spreads round the world by grandma's blue budgie.nature loves diversity and the reasons are mostly unclear. My opinion is that asd genetics are biological protection for a future ice age. winston Churchill, well before Hitler,in 1910 proposed a 'mercy killing'proposal in the houses of parliment to eradicate,in his words 'life not worthy of life'.
13. Confused new member

yes,to the last question. But firstly learn about the distinctions between high functioning autisim and aspergers, they overlap considerably. the odds are your gp has'nt a clue and is stuck in an 'asperger and Autisim'.The term ASD or Autisim Spectrum Disorders has come into use causing a few ripples. i would'nt beleive my asd ,all the 'mental' symptoms are pretty much swamped by 'symptoms' of many mental illnesses so are difficult to objectivley see.Concentrate on your physical tendencies, diet, clothes and things that touch your skin, sleeping patternsthere's lots of clear symptoms. One problem is what 's called the triad of impairments, this means that in several areas ,to a greter or lesser extent your a unique mix. make a list of any odd or strict dietary tendencies, think about how you respond to light and sound and also touch(skin) taste and smells,do you get stressed by quiet noises getting louder and louder?there's a lot to it and thats why most asd'rs are still undiagnosed and the simplistic drug orientated mental health regime blunders valiantly on diagnosing a multitude of 'personality disorders' many of them based on short term observation or a simplistic checklist of symptoms.the nhs mental health services are mostly unaware they are involved in their own 'beleif system/philosphy' so generally stop at the first bustop they recongise as they have little experience of unseen territory. You can contact the National Autistic Society, for what its worth.they can send you an imformation pack including a letter/introduction about autisim/asd to give to your gp.Don't expect much though the general gp knowledge base is limited to watching 'rain man' the film, and aspergers cases as being super intelligent social retards who live with their mums while hacking the pentagons computers,or,at the other extreme, people with extreme communicarion and behavioural problems. This site is an excellent site to learn about the subject,(thanks for not banning me moderators, and sorry Mumbles)Just take your time.there's no 'cure' but there is a lot of help and guidance from people who've walked the path before, cognitive behavioural therapy, diet awareness and melatonin(a natural body chemical) seem a good way forward. In my OPINION although I'm not 'qualified' in the subject ,your letter does express a few traits but remember that the symptoms overlap a lot of mental health problems and mis diagnosis seems a common problem so take your time and don't jump to any conclusions.cheers philipo x
14. Going Out

The social/going out thing is a bummer.the noises are a bit daunting if your used to being inside alot.you just have to go out a few times and then you get more used to it.dining out is good, its usually quieter than a boozer/club and a good trianer for the social aspects. i used to do sound engineering in clubs for years but was quite terrified of all the people(audience). In my early twenties i put my nerves through hell just to sart doing what I loved ,which is messing about with sound and lights/film.My love of it overode my fear of the social situations/people but even after years of it I'd spend litttle time talking to the punters and after everygig would pack up and sneak off home before the band/punters could bully me into going to the parties afterwards.when I'd get home at 2 am plus i'd sit in the livvy and savour 'absolute silence'.i used to feel really down that i was missing out on the human contact being people phobic, but, after a frw years i noticed all the 'happy people' or punters looking rather ragged from drink n drugs, and saw a lot do down with strokes and heart disease and was glad i was never pulled into the world of drink.
15. Tightrope Act

Not a wasted life of sorrow!A life when you can't switch off the internal dialouge in your head.its a curse of awareness darkshine, not a classic shizophrenicness. The voice is all the negatives that chip at us all,a voice of exasperation and unfullfillment, and negative reinforcment.its somthing you always have to fight against. day to day functioning can feel like a fine line and a balancing act, just keep doing it and you'll get better at it everyday,it will reward you well in the future
