  1. Loulou Clarkes used to sell lights up to size 5. I have a pair size 5 that were old stock in a shop. I bought them in an emergency and was charged only 20 euro for them three years ago. You could contact Clarkes and see would they have old stock or see could you get a pair second hand. Mine are a bit shabby and I live in Dublin but if you are stuck, I'd put them through a wash send them to you and you could get new batteries or swap your old ones over. I have heard this is poss. although I have never done it myself. Hope this helps Alli
  2. Just had 4 year old assessed worried about clumsiness poss. Sensory Integration probs. Older brother has AS. Meeting today to get results. They dropped in the assessment yesterday by hand giving me virtually no time to digest it or find out anything. This is the only clinic dealing with Sensory Integration. There is another one that deals behavioral issues which I feel does not apply to him (currently anyway). They assesed him as being very clever. They say he has sensory processing problems not sensory integration probs and want to refer him on to "rule out AS" (their words) due to family history. Is the treatment for sensory processing probs different to sensory integration probs. Alli very stressed about meeting

  4. Thought I had saved a link to this topic "Is as/asd really a disability" but can't get it back. Tried putting it in search bar but keeps saying "error". Help needed Alli
  5. Happy New Year Haven't posted for a while as things were fairly difficult, my son started to self-harm, couldn't get any help at first etc. Anyway I was awarded an allowence recently and I now have to justify why it should be backdated. Can anyone help with pointing me in the direction of useful points to use when describing the daily realities of living with a very young child/baby with AS. Normally could do this without help but I am very stressed and only have a day to get it together. Thanks Alli
  6. Thanks for all your replies yes I think there is a touch of the Kevin's about this. He thinks we are so wierd, stupid and he would be embarrassed for people to meet us. I spoke to him about inviting friends over. He now says they don't live nearby and he thinks I have a real problem in that I have strange notions of what I think people "normally do" in certain situations!!!!!!!! Alli
  7. My son is !5 and AS. He will go into town to hear music and over a period of time he has made some "friends". They often meet on the bus going in or at the venue but this is purely accidently. He never actively rings them or arranges to meet. I am pleased that he has social contacts but we have never met any of them. He refuses to bring any of them to the house as he thinks our house is c**p (its really nice!) and he certainly doesn't want anyone to meet us.. He feels really ashamed of us. I recently insisted that he give me a phone no. of someone who is going definitely to each gig ( using examples of people who had gone missing, my legal obligation to protect him etc ) He was livid but now accepts it as one of the only preconditions to going out. Any suggestions to how I could help him to get over these worries, have his friends over etc. When my friends come over he often tries to monopolise them when he should really be inviting his own friends over. 9. Carole We had similar probs and we adopted your approach and it really improved things. So many times I wanted to suggest what you outlined in your post. You really express it so well. We still have problems but no one in our house uses physical aggression. Our son still shouts/swears when we try to discuss things but this is improving too. Alli

  12. I recently read a post which suggested things to ask for in school. Can't find it now. Can anyone remember what it was called? Thanks Alli
  13. Corcaigh Saw that programme, thought it was good overall but didn't like the constant switches to apes/monkeys in the zoo. Did that make you feel uncomfortable? Alli
  14. My son hates to be over-praised if there is such a word. He doesn't seem to care about praise and if someone does "overdo" it, he finds it patronising. I try and say things like "great, I knew you could do it" as otherwise he will interpret the praise as being surprise that he was able to do something. Does this make sense? Hope this helps Alli
  15. Frances-Mary Some very sound advice has been given. I hope things go better for you. Alli
  16. Currently trying to find out if this programme can help teenagers with A.S. who are exceptionally able. The Son-rise team say that they can help children with AS but I thought that they use ABA and that this was aimed at younger less able children. I'm v. confused about it. They have offered me a twenty minute free consultation, not sure what to do. Heard it is mega expensive too but can't seem to find out how much. My son is 15. Alli
  17. Thank you so much. I am going to go and see them but it is really helpful to have some idea Alli
  18. My son has been diagnosed as having A.S. I took him privately to a psychiatrist and he referred him for these tests. The local hospital had a fit when they saw the tests. First of all they said they couldn't read his writing, then they said they didn't know what some of them are. I now have them typed and am going to go back with them. I would love to know what these tests are before I talk to the hospital again. They are as follows: Full metabolic screen Fragile X test in which you use tubes EDTA and lithium heparin. Urine test for organic acids. I am wondering whether the psy is just calling tests by a different name than what a gp would. I was going to get back on to him and ask for a exp. but I have already tackled him for giving me referrals to services that don't exist. Alli

Tez Have been told by Psy. that studies have shown that meds are less "successful" where there is a dual diagnosis. Never heard/read this anywhere else. Alli

Thanks Tez and all in the thread. That really helped. Will post any info that I find here. Bid "This is just my opinion and I hope I don't upset anyone" I really appreciate the fact that forum members give an honest open comment on how things worked or did not work for their children. We are not medical experts but we are experts in the parenting of our own children. Anyone considering medication for their child wants to hear every aspect of the arguments for and against. I particularly liked the way this thread shows that where medication is used or not, it depends on the child and a maybe a set of circumstances that change. Most people will not be offended by an alternate view. They will be delighted to have that information because it may apply to their child in the present or the future. Alli
  21. I need to find pragmatic skills therapy for my 15 year old son who has recently been diagnosed with AS. How do I go about this? Is there a list available. Prepared to travel anywhere literally. Alli
