ASue67 Report post Posted July 7, 2008 York for me please!
Bagpuss Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Ok, York on the 9th August it is Dunno where though Anyone know York well? Like KarenT, I've been to the railway museum (which would be fab for kids that are coming), how would the adults coming alone feel about it? KarenT, put J in his karate kit anyway I know a couple of nice Italian restaurants, but not really kiddie friendly. York Dungeons? Anyone know any nice parks? But weather may be naff, so may be best to plan for rain
Mumble Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Anyone know York well? I know Yorkie well - does that count? Like KarenT, I've been to the railway museum (which would be fab for kids that are coming), how would the adults coming alone feel about it? Fine - is it easy to get to from the station? York Dungeons? *Puts spare underwear in ironing pile* may be best to plan for rain Well it is the North .... Just a thought, how are you all going to keep your coal dry? TheNeil Report post Posted July 7, 2008 I know Yorkie well - does that count? Do you know nothing? It states quite clearly on the packet: NOT FOR GIRLS. Tsk, tsk, tsk Fine - is it easy to get to from the station? Easy (if you read and speak 'Yorkshire' of course - you cockneys might struggle). Maybe someone could be persuaded to meet you at the station Well it is the North .... <cough>Greenwich - 12th July 2008<cough> Just a thought, how are you all going to keep your coal dry? Massive, massive coal umbrellas (available on practically every street corner up here)(well we have to something to put on street corners given the lack of pearly kings and queens that are a staple part of life in London)

But weather may be naff, so may be best to plan for rain Been a while since I was last in York (like 18 months or so) so memory a bit hazy (that said, it could have been 18 minutes since I was last in York and memory would still be a bit hazy). As I remember it there's a fairly big park just next to the river and fairly close to the city centre (as in 5-10 minutes walk). No idea of what it's called though . Can't offer any advice/ideas on where to eat though Don't know about the other kid-free peeps but I for one would be happy to go to the Railway Museum - plenty of space to 'escape' if things get too much etc. etc. etc.
Bagpuss Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Aye, we can just bung you on the York Eye
pearl Report post Posted July 7, 2008 There's the Abbey Gardens (is it called?) kind of between the river & the Minster. Ruins to climb on. Theres a museum there. Maybe its the museum gardens? There are lots of squirrels. (But its definitely not called Squirrel Gardens)
KarenT Report post Posted July 7, 2008 OOh I'd love to go on the York Eye, so would J!! Can we, Mum, can we, can we?? NRM car park is 7 for the day, which seems reasonable for York (and easy too). SV, you can come in the Thirlmobile if you like (and if you trust me!). Karen x
Mumble Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Do you know nothing? It states quite clearly on the packet: NOT FOR GIRLS. Tsk, tsk, tsk Yeah, I know. It's my vain attempt at breaking free from my Aspie Shackles by, shhh, breaking a rule. Easy (if you read and speak 'Yorkshire' of course - you cockneys might struggle). Maybe someone could be persuaded to meet you at the station Erm, you seem to have got totally the wrong idea about me (), I'm not a cok-er-knee, I'm a placid, genteel, Suvverner. *Thinks about which Northerner to persuade, who I will understand, to meet me at the station .... TheNeil Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Yeah, I know. It's my vain attempt at breaking free from my Aspie Shackles by, shhh, breaking a rule. Rebel...without a chocolate bar. And socialising as well - you're close to being stripped of your Aspie-ness Erm, you seem to have got totally the wrong idea about me (), I'm not a cok-er-knee, I'm a placid, genteel, Suvverner. *Thinks about which Northerner to persuade, who I will understand, to meet me at the station .... Brain explodes, function cannot be performed, paradox in requirements* You're from London therefore you're a cockernee - born within the sound of bow bells (whatever that means), always got 'Knees Up Muvva Brahn' on your iPod, and always telling people to 'ave a banana' (<sigh> I wish I knew what any of that actually meant but it's like a foreign language me). Can you see the Queen Vic pub from where you live? I'll see if I can think of anyone who could meet you at the station. If all else fails I could do it (although I'd have to buy a pad and marker pen to communicate via - you can read and write can't you? )

Mumble Report post Posted July 9, 2008 Could we have a show of cyber hands for York, National Railway Museum, Sat 9th August? *Waves hand with white flag attached to stop those vicious Northerners coming in for the kill* I can come provided I have some advanced warning (i.e. now!! ) about times (there and back - but I can't get to York station before 10:01am), so I can book my train ticket, because if I have to get it on the day, it'll cost a small fortune. Although, I suppose I could book it and go for a day out in York by myself anyway ...

Mumble Report post Posted July 9, 2008 What about 11.00? Would everyone be able to make it for then? 11:00am is good, though looking at tickets I might come earlier ( .... much earlier the train that gets there around 9:00 is half the price of the others - I'll look and see anyway - anyone know anywhere good for breakfast within striding distance of York station? ). And what time do you normally finish? I can get any train between 4pm and 8pm but if I book in advance it's much cheaper. I'll probably book a later one anyway just to be safe; I assume York is fairly safe once the Northern sun has set at 2pm?

Sorry Mumble, can't help with cafe's as I don't know York very well, other than spending the odd day trip there. From what I remember though, York Station itself has places to eat. Unsure what time the meet up will finish as we usually meet at Newcastle and go for a meal which tends to last only a few hours. I should think it'll be like Greenwich with people staying as long as they can/want with no pressure.

Theres a nice-ish cafe on York station itself Mumble - I think its a converted signal box or something, its on the platform & you go up some stairs to it. They do bacon butties etc & you can watch the trains coming & going. Or theres Cafe Concerto (if its still there) - kind of left past the Minster (sorry its been a while!) TheNeil Report post Posted July 9, 2008 I assume York is fairly safe once the Northern sun has set at 2pm? They've had electricity installed in York recently and now boast over 18 street lights - so no need to worry about the sun setting. If it does get dark then I'm sure one of us uncouth northerners will set fire to our bath full of coal

BTW, if your guineas like greengrocer grass, you should bring them to London - we have a whole Living Rooms made of Grass (actually, it's quite comfy )

Anyway, thanks for the offer - I shall look out for people like Pearl and TheNeil. BTW, if your guineas like greengrocer grass, you should bring them to London - we have a whole Living Rooms made of Grass (actually, it's quite comfy ) I thought the streets were paved with gold? Now you're telling me that living rooms are covered in grass? Do cockerknees actually vacuum the carpet or mow it? (Note to self: Don't mention this in front of the GPs - if they get wind of a living room covered in grass they'll make my life hell again and try to trick me into moving us to London on the pretext of meeting Sir Alan Sugar ) I think I'll stick to my terrace house, whippets, pigeons and coal mining. You southerners with your fancy ways [bwuhahahahaha. I just knew that saying I was going to be there was a guaranteed scheme to stop you from venturing north of Watford ]
