My beautiful dog Zeus was hit by a car on sunday afternoon.

He has been in the PDSA since then. He has severely broken his rear right femur. The vet said they have never seen one as bad as this. They asked a specialist for advice & were told that they would operate but the procedure will cost ?2000 (which I do not have) and that they isnt a great chance it will work anyway.

I didnt get him insured because:

a) i cant afford it

B) i thought the PDSA dealt with all problems!!

The PDSA are planning to have their own Vet operate on Friday just to give his leg a chance but obviously he/she isnt specialised.

He's been really depressed, wasnt eating....so i went in yesterday & managed to get him to eat while i was there.

He started eating little bits after I left throughout the day & managed to go out for a little walk this morning (which is a first!!)

He's starting making noise now too (which they are going to wish he hadnt! lol)

So it looks like he's getting stronger (probably down to him eating again)

I'm going to take him in some of his usual food to see if that helps him feel more at home & take the kids to see him in a little while.

In the mean time, its highly likely he will lose his leg and they have said that as he is such a big boy his other leg may not take the weight if it comes to that. Having said that he is only 2 so has age on his side.

Please please pray & keep your fingers crossed for him.....it's horrible not having him here, house is like a ghost house!

here is a picture of him last year (with my youngest son)

Hi Minerva,

Will be sending lots of little prayers up for Zeus. Miracles do happen - and I'll definitely be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you all. Hope your kids are coping with this.

Take care,

Jb

Sorry to hear about that, we've taken out insurance for my dog as PDSA don't even covered where we live, not cheap but couldn't risk a huge bill, was my main thing I budgetted for when we were looking into getting a dog. But they do have fundraising shops  so they expect help but not to help. Also when my Dad's dog took ill we found out they wouldn't cover a lot of treatments. Suppose it is all down to funding really.

Hope the little guy is feeling better soon, fingers crossed for him >:D<<'>

minerva sorry to hear about your dog, this may help you,my mum and dad are going through a similar situation, there is a charity called The centenary trust, your vet needs to get in touch with them and they will fax them an application form and your vet can apply for funding on your behalf, they mainly pay out for animals injured on the road.

Info from the dogs trust website says....

Can Dogs Trust offer any help to cover the costs of my dog?s operation? He is not covered by insurance and I?m having trouble affording the vet?s fees.

Unfortunately Dogs Trust is not often able to help with the financial cost of veterinary care (other than neutering for those receiving means-tested benefits), as we do not have our own clinics. However, we have a Centenary Trust Fund, which can sometimes help with some of the cost of emergency veterinary treatment. Please call the Centenary Trust Fund line on 020 7833 7625 where you will be asked to leave a message including your vet?s details.

We would also advise you to try one or all of the following organisations that are more veterinary based and may be able to help:

Blue Cross - 01993 822651, PDSA - 0800 7312502, RSPCA - 0870 0101181 You should also try talking to your vet, as they may agree to let you pay the bill by more manageable instalments.

Hope that helps.

But they do have fundraising shops  so they expect help but not to help.

What makes me sick is that as I cant work due to benefits I receive & not having availiability to work full time to break even the amount i get now, to keep me sane I have been volunteering in the PDSA shop since last September.

I figured of all the places to volunteer for it'd have to be the one I get use out of, didnt realise it would come to a time where I have used up any wages I have earnt and Zeus wont get what he needs after all that anyway!

Thanks all for your kind words. I will give the Centenary Trust fund a call and hope they can get something sorted!

For now he isnt doing too well today, I went to visit him and took him out a couple of times but he is really down. Hes refusing drink as well as food now so has been put on a drip. They were considering sending him hope to try & raise his spirits but he needs a morphine injection every 3 hours so they decided against it. Said even if i was prepared to drive him out there everytime it was due, the going backwards & forwards would probably to him more harm than good :(

I hope you manage to get some funding for this, Minerva.

In the meantime, may Zeus live up to his name and prove himself invincible!

I remember that the PDSA were not the 'wonder charity' when we had a problem with our hamster when I growing up (loooonnnngggg time ago). I can't remember what was wrong withit but my mum phoned up and they started asking her if she was on benefits etc. - never asked what was wrong with the animal and she hit the roof...and then had to take it less charitable vet

Don't worry, he'll pull through or do what dogs do best...cope with it

Right! They operated on him yesterday & it was a 3.5 hour operation. Apparently they almost lost hope half way through as the bone was already shattered but as they were trying to fix it it was splintering even more but they kept going & eventually have managed to piece it back together with pins, plates and wires.

He is far from out of the woods yet. The next few weeks are going to be crucial in his recovery but....HE IS HOME!!!!! When i called them this morning they said he woke up feeling much much happier, ate his breakfast & has a twinkle in his eye so i can come & collect him!!

He is on cage rest and will be for a good while. His leg is leaking lots of fluid left from the swelling etc & he really looks like he's just had a fight with a car (duh!)

The kids are on strict instructions not to get him excited & i'm preparing to be housebound for a while although i'm not bothered in the slightest, if it means theres a chance he'll keep his leg i will do anything!!

I'll keep you all posted as to how he's doing (especially seeing as though i'm going to be in 99% of the time!! lol

your not kidding!! They both went to an air show yesterday so me & Zeus had a peaceful day, then within minutes of getting back the youngest decided he looked like he needed to go out & waited till i went to the toilet to let him out!!

Picture me running out of the bathroom with my trousers halfway down my legs screaming!!!!! not a pretty sight i can tell you!! Hopefully it scared my son enough to not do it again lol

We went to the vets today for a check up & they were very impressed by him, said he looks better than expected!! Although she did point out that he wouldnt be out of the woods for AT LEAST 2 months. He wasnt happy about going into the room, think he thought i was going to leave him again & decided to put up a huge fight, which he actually used his bad leg! It took 3 of us to carry him in the room! Im sure that as long as we treat him like hes made of china for the next couple of months he "should" be fine!!

I'm dreading him feeling better though as obviously the better he feels the harder it will be to keep him contained, i'm a stubborn ***** though so i'm not going to be giving up!! If he ends up losing his leg it's not going to be down to me or anything i could have done differently!!

Nicke & Zeus :)

thanx Westie, it was definately good to get out.....Zeus decided to shout at every dog we drove past but turned real quiet once we got to the vets again....guess he knows he cant fight so only shouts at other dogs from a distance LOL

Pain in the butt though cos the floor was wet in the waiting room & the poor lil man fell over & hurt his leg while we were waiting, so when we got in there he wouldnt put any weight on it again & the Vet was a lil concerned about it.

I told her about him falling & she said they would put it down to that. As she was making an appointment for his Xrays next week he decided it stopped hurting & put it back down so she got to see it & was happier :)

They are happy with his progress so far but still say he is to be on cage rest 24/7 as it isnt worth taking any risks at all.

The Xrays next week will give a clearer picture as to how well its mending & they may have to remove a couple of pins while hes asleep if they are seen to be causing an abstruction or anything.

so....thats that....your stuck with me & my passing the time for a little while longer LOL
