  1. Welcome to the forum sweety. Jen
  2. Our son was diagnosed at 5 years. He knew he was different but he did not understand why. We told him he was AS when he was 7. This helped him to understand his condition and realise that we needed to address his differences. Its very important to make it clear to the children that they may be difference but they can still achieve in the areas they are good at. Our son was not ready to hear the diagnosis at 5 years because it would not of made a difference to him. Jen

Has anyone used any music to help calm there child down? How successful was this? There is one advertised by mozart which is supposed to provide a calming influence. Jen
  6. There is a new website with the following information developed as part of a Scotish Executive commissioned project. It is aimed at primary care professionals. At least it is laying down a foundation for children and adults with ASD. The information covers:- The Patient with an ASD A: How an ASD might impact on the individual B: Sensory differences and how they can impact on behaviour C: Understanding the meaning of behaviour Practical Strategies Health Issues Identification and diagnosis The web site is http://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/asd Jen
  7. Well done you are so close to the end now. Keep strong. Jen
  8. A paediatrican works with school age children. They work in the local clinic with the school nurse. They assess children with problems. They are not experienced to diagnose ASD and normally refer children with these concerns to the paediatric psychatrist who specialise in mental health. The paediatric psychatrist will interview parents at a clinic visit. They cover everything from pregnacncy, delivery, what the child was like as a baby, during toddler stage, nursery, school etc. They will also go into school to observe the child. They monitor the child in clinic several times before giving a diagnosis. Hence you get a more indepth assessment and diagnosis or non diagnosis which ever is appropriate. Jen

    CONGRATULATION. <'> <'> <'> Jen
  10. Ask you GP for a second referal to another Paedatrican. All people are entitled to a second opinion if they are not happy with the first. Ring up your local ASD group and they may be able to tell you which people are more recommended in your area. I am slightly confused because a paediatrican does not normally make the diagnosis it needs to be someone from psychiatry. ASk you GP to refer to someone in this area. By the sounds of the school it would probably be better moving her to a school that is SEN friendly because if you do get a diagnosisl, the school will not co-operate. Your child either has problems at school and the school are ignoring her. Or there is not a problem with your child. Mothers instint is normally always right. Jen
  11. This is for all you teachers LSA and school governors. At my sons school they are turning a small cloakroom into a quiet room. (As the calm room is constently used by children, teachers etc and therefore is not a calm room) The headmistress was going to relocate the two rails of coat hooks into another cloakroom and place them on an opposite wall to some other coat hooks. The corridor is wide enough to contain a standard door plus a surrounding area. (I will measure it exactly another day). The headmistress can remember being told (don't know if it was during her time or before she was there) that the area orginally had coat hooks on both sides of the wall but they were told to move them for health and safety reasons. The area we are discussing is not near a fire exit or near the door the children use for going into and out of the corridor. Do any one know where I can get written information on safety issues for cloak rooms in school. The classrooms are in a ?portable area separate from the main school which contains a long corridor with areas off for 3 cloak rooms storage room with a piano in than a classroom off on the left side of the corridor and another classroom on the right side of the corridor. (Hope this makes sense) Jen
  12. Great news, isn't funny how the LEA reconsider prior to SENDIST date!! Jen
  13. I actually recorded my son having a meltdown. Then when he was relaxed I explained to him what normally happens. We than sat and watched it on the video. It had a drastic effect on him and now after each meltdown he always asks if he hurt anyone. Jen
  14. our child is 9 years diagnosed at 5 years with ASD and Sensory Integration with sensory modulation difficulties. Has full time support at school. He had OT with a qualified sensory OT for several years, is now on maintenance OT. This has made such a difference. This year we have tried enzymes and although I could not see any difference his school reports he was more relaxed, could concentrate, sit still and was able to listen more. His quality of work had improved. The majority of my sons problems are within school and trying to get through the school day due to his sensory problems. We have also used coloured glasses for a few years which makes it easier for him. We also use melatonin Jen
  15. We meet with out LEA officer and also took a letter clarifing what we were saying in the meeting. You just state what you do not like and why and what needs to be included and how you want it worded. Back this up with reports eg school ed psy etc which back up what you are saying. Also ask for a copy of all the appendix used to form the statement as some times they have used old information or ignored pieces of information. They don't like going to tribunal but I can see them not ensuring the statement is sufficient because that will give them savings off there budget for another 6 months. Good Luck Jen
  16. My son was making similar statement at the same age. All I done is sat down with him and explained that as long as we done our best than that is all that matters. I explained how everyone has different abilities such as drawing building, cooking etc and we need all these different people to make a good world. Jen
  17. my son loves these probiotics however, they have made no difference with his ASD Jen

  19. Just an update to say our 16 year old has now come back and decided not to use his fists to talk. Now mums taxi service has to start again. Took him to an amusement park yesterday and for a driving lesson today. Isn.t it amazing how we spend all our time on our children, its no wonder we all get tired. Thanks for everyones help Jen
  20. Oracle Brooke and Will thanks for your views it has helped me to think from a different perspective. Have been speaking by text to my son and I have invited him to come round tonight to have a discussion but he said hes "too busy" going to the gym and meeting his friend. (I think its called pride) will leave the ball in his court and see what happens. I been talking to my husband and I have explained that a week is too long so I think once he comes home and has a discussion and we are happy with what is said than he will be allowed back tomorrow. Jen
  21. the 16 year old does get quality time with me, he also works during the holidays so is very close to his father. I took him round all the colleges and helped him choose the course he wanted to study. I am always dropping him off to play tennis and than collect him. (he calls me his taxi)!! On saturday we went and booked some driving lessons on a simulator and arranged his first driving lesson on his 17th birthday. On sunday afternoon I was going to take him for a driving lesson on some private land (he is desperate to drive). We had our sunday dinner, than I washed up and told my son I just wanted to sit down and have a cup of tea for 20 minutes than I would take him on a driving lesson minus his younger brother, he also wanted to go and visit his cousin so after the driving lesson we were going to see his cousin. He spent the 20 minutes annoying his younger brother (while I was drinking my tea) then he become violent when his younger brother got mad and responded to him. I could see all this from the next room I was sitting in. Thanks for the advice and I will text him tomorrow and see if he wants to meet and talk. I keep telling my husband our son responds angry to the texts we send him but he does not mean the angry response he is using when he texts back. On the one hand I want to give him space but I do not want him to feel unloved or uncared for. Jen

    Im so indecisive

our friends went to the dog home and aked for medium sized dog of good character. The staff at the dogs home advised them of a dog with a good tempement. We are dog sitting at the moment and he is a fantastic dog. Because he is older, you miss all the mess and chewed furniture and you know how the dog is going to turn out. Jen
  23. On Sunday our 16 year old son was annoying our 9 year old (ASD) son. I told my 16 year old off and than my 16 year old went into an extreme temper and started kicking and punching our younger son. I tried to interven and told the 16 year off for being so violent. I moved the 9 year old to the kitchen to get him out of the way of his brother, his brother followed us into the kitchen than started hitting the youngist one again screaming and shouting at him for getting him into trouble with his mum. I then took the 9 year old out to the garden where again the 16 year old followed us and threw his brother onto the dirt and started kicking and punching him. I again interviened and had to put the youngest one in the car and drive away to keep him safe. We can not put up with our eldest child being so violent to his younger brother. Also it would mean our youngest going to school covered in bruises and than social services would get involved. On Sunday we told the 16 year old he had to go and stop with his friends for one week than we would discuss if he could come home. We told him that we would not tolerate him being violent to anyone in the house. (He was stopping with his called Jon, we had looked after Jon for 2 weeks when his mother had kicked him out). (our son is not one for staying at his friends he always perfers his friends to stop at ours). Our son wanted to come back home on monday but we would not let him, he wanted to come back today or tomorrow, but we think by the way he is sending texts that he has not learned by his mistakes. (one text states he is not learning anything by having to stay with his friend for a week). On the other hand I do not like him staying out because you do not know what he is going to get involved in. (So far he has been a good boy). I know I need to support my husband and back him up but I feel a week is too long. But I also know my son needs to learn a lesson if he is to come back home. My oldest son has always been jelous of the youngest one. Obviously I am upset at the moment and very p...... off. Jen
