    School Meeting

The ASD team use a strength and weakness form to help the teacher. They also assess the children on a one to one level in a small group situation in the classroom and in a large group situation in the classroom. The ASD will monitor and advise even if the child has not got a diagnosis. They do fantastic work with the teachers. The member of my ASD team goes in regular to update the whole staff including the dinner ladies. Why did the meeting not start off with an introduction from everyone and there role. If strangers are present the meeting should always start in this way. Jen
  2. Surely Optometrist have monthly journal that they read to keep them aware of what changes are happening. Obviously not everyone can be trained or expected to provide the service of specialist but why are they not aware of Ian's work. Especially as its a relatively new area where further research should be carried out. Jen

    Sorry

Hailey, you were going through a bereavement. Then you had to cope with the reality of your father not being your real father. You need to have issues with this otherwise you will have a break down. Shout, send us lots of messages anything that helps you come to terms with it. The effects of having to come to terms with having a different father may mean you have not gone through the bereavement process. Some people can take a year to go through it some people can take several. Its like when we got a diagnosis of our children. Some people are angry, some people do not want to accept it, some people are ready to accept the diagnosis. It takes different amounts of time and lots on emotions on the way. You may need to ask to be referred to a counsellor as this would help you greatly. So please ask for a referal if you are having problems. Take care Jen

    Health setback.

Steven Johnsons syndrome is not very nice for your child. As they have said take it easy and part time schooling should help. In our area we have James Brindley schools which are hospital schools but also have children who have been excluded from school or children where the normal school environment is just too much for them. They are an excellent resorce. Phone your LEA and find out what is available Jen
  5. Educational Psy, Senco and GP can not diagnose nor say it is not ASD or anything else. They can give there opinion but has we all know all children act differently with different environments and with what is going on. The Psychatrist put all this information together with regular observation of the child. Documented information from the parents regarding the birth, how the child was as a baby. How the child is at home. How the child communicates and plays in the home situation. Jen

    Does Anybody Know

Goverment legisaltion states if the child has not returned after a granted leave of 10 days then the name can be removed from the register. It does not mention a fine. It also says if the child has been out of school for 4 weeks and the school have not found out the reason why then they can not take the childs name off the list. Within our LEA we have children going off to India and Pakistan for 6 weeks. What is right for one is right for all Jen
  7. The coloured lensed change the sensory processing reaction. Hence some lenses will change it to a slower one and some will be a faster one. I was talking to a friend who is going to a talk in American on lenses for ASD children and the information she gave me was more useful than the information I have been given in this country but America always seems ahead of us with different things. Jen
  8. Just wait and see what the other assessment reveal. Diagnoses do change over time as well. AS you say you have learned things here so that is good. Take it step by step but saying that the parents are normally right. Jen
  9. my son had the same problem and had to go back every 3 months for assessment and glasses to be changed. Two years later and he has not needed an operation but he still needs to go back every 6 months and get them checked and a new prescription for glasses. SAying that he hates having the drops put in to the point of we now apply them at home before attending for his appointment. Good luck if your child needs surgery, they do it has a day case now if the child is operated in the morning. Jen
  10. Has any one tried using enzymes for their children. If so what was the result. I have been reading a book on the subject. Jen
  11. Well done, what a major achievement you deserve your award. Jen
  12. Yes that was the one I was trying to find Jen
  13. roll on Tuesday so it is all finish. SS might be able to put in some help and support for you Jen
  14. Its essential that any one who asseses your child sees him and obtain reports on the child in different situations. This way they can get a detailed assessment and hence get an accurate diagnosis Jen
  15. We have one in our LEA. I was speaking to one of the LSA who work in the unit, I ask what training had been provided for her or the other assistances that work in the unit. The answer was none, you just copy some one who has worked there for a while. My son's old lSA moved to the unit and she is the only one with ASD training that was provided by my sons school. I think this is disgusting. If they work in a special unit then they need to be trained. we are all aware of how little training LSA have. Have other parents ask there school, units or LSA what training they have received and what it included Jen
  16. I was going to order some books today but I can not find the tread with the name on. One from ?salisbury are there any other good books anyone else has read Jen
  17. Do the social service know your ex was abusive. Have social services talked with the childs mother. Ask social service what else needs to be done? You are in a difficult position but I am pleased you can see it from the side of SS protecting your son. Who is looking after your son? Can you now visit him (supervised more frequently) Jen
  18. Reading from the information the work on coloured lenses orginated from coloured lenses for dyslexia Jen
  19. hope you have some time to enjoy your day. Happy Birthday Jen

    Been to the Drs..

Well done for getting across to the GP how you feel. If you do not feel better in a few weeks please go back to him and ask for your medication to be reviewed. Jen
  21. you could always get a private assessment and still wait on the NHS for a second opinion that way you keep all doors open and probable have piece of mind. As I have said before our LEA did not recognise our private OT diagnosis even though the ed psy sss and school all agreed with the private OT. We are going to appeal in June but its takes 12 months from asking for the statement to be changed, getting the finalised statement, applying to SENDIST getting an agreeable date and then the cost of going to tribunal and all the inconvenience and mental exhaustion. But at least we will get a fair trial on the day. Jen
  22. I can understand your concerns but the school may see it has helping your son. It would be interesting to ask the headmistres what explanation the children have been given for the use of the picture and take it from there. Once the pictures were put up some of the damage was done. However, depending on what they said to the children it might do more damage than good. Jen
  23. My son wanted to attend an afterschool art club, this is the only time he has asked to attend an after school activity. There were only 15 places available for the whole school and my son was allocated a place on a Wednesday afternoon. (I said I would go in and supervise him in the art club) This aternoon I went into school at 3.30. His teacher told me that during the morning Paul had been allocated a task to do in his group. He did not want to do the activity he had been allocated and had put his hands on his ears. (This is normally a sign of stress). Later the teacher put a DVD on and my son sat up to watch and listen to the DVD. After the DVD my sons LSA came into the class to do some work with him. He proceeded to put his hands over his ears and did not want to work. This lasted for 2 lessons until it was time for dinner. At which time he recovered enough to eat his lunch and go out to play. His teacher and LSA felt he was using his problem to his advantage and therefore should not go to art club. I can understand where the teacher was coming from but this was the first time he was eager to go to an afterschool activity. Hence I took him out of the art club and explained to him that the club was for people who had worked hard and done there best. I do not know if I done the right thing because I knew that if my child had attended the art club he would of seen the school from a different perspective. What would you have done? Jen
