bid Report post Posted June 6, 2007 Loads of <'> <'> <'> and plenty of I know just how you feel, hun <'> I had a week's notice for the initial visit, then he went for his overnight stay the following week, and then went that Sunday. Might be worth doing what I did, which was as soon as I knew we had the initial visit, I went out and bought suitcases, towels, dressing gown, etc, etc...I kept all the receipts so I could always take them back, but I was so glad I was organised as it all happened so quickly in the end. Be gentle with yourself <'> Bid

oxgirl Report post Posted June 6, 2007 You're bound to have mixed feelings, hev. <'> Try and focus on six months from now when, hopefully, you'll all be settled into your new routines and things will be going really well (fingers crossed). Take care of yourself and give yourself plenty of time for the news to sink in. Is this the school that is nearer to you? Best of luck. <'> <'> ~ Mel ~
bid Report post Posted June 6, 2007 (edited) bid im thinking he wont start till september now, what do you think? Not sure, Hev...I guess it depends on the individual school?? I thought Auriel would start in the January, but in the end he started 4 weeks before the end of the Christmas term, because he was so desperate to go, and he had been out of school for 6 months by then. I was just glad I had bought ahead, because it was a real rush (especially naming everything) and if I hadn't I would have only had one Saturday to get everything! When we went for the initial visit I asked how soon he would start, and the school said asap depending on the LEA, so I would just ask when you go if I were you. In the end, our LEA were very good and all the paperwork followed him to his school rather than going first. Bid Edited June 6, 2007 by bid

Kazzen161 Report post Posted June 6, 2007 (especially naming everything) Bid Oh yes - I hated naming everything - even the socks! Best to buy sew-on labels, as the iron ones soon come off. Check on the laundry arrangements, as T's school put everything on a hot wash, so anything a bit fragile soon shrank! I bought T a calendar so I could mark on it any family birthdays and the days when he would be coming home. Also make sure he has some photos of the family to take, and some posters for his room if they are allowed. Karen

pearl Report post Posted June 6, 2007 Ooo, Hev, everything crossed for you & Steve. About the labels - you can get a special pen & write his name on the washing label thingy - saves an awful lot of sewing.
Kazzen161 Report post Posted June 6, 2007 About the labels - you can get a special pen & write his name on the washing label thingy - saves an awful lot of sewing. That's Ok if you have a child that does not insist every label is cut out - lol! Re: dormitories - it depends on the type of school - but most specialist independent schools offer single rooms now I believe (T's school used to have a few 2 person rooms, but all are now singles). I only saw one school that had a dormitory type set-up (for 6 children). My son would not have coped with that. It should say in their prospectus how the accommodation is set up. fiorelli Report post Posted June 7, 2007 i thought they slept in dormitories,do they usually have their own rooms then? Louis will be having a room of his own, although there are 'twin' rooms. I suppose it depends on the school

Kazzen161 Report post Posted June 7, 2007 You should ask their policy on mobile phones. T was allowed them (but at their own risk - liable to get lost or misplaced). Check the reception too - T couldn't get a signal on some suppliers at his secondary school. The school/housebase should have an ordinary phone where he can phone home anyway (T never did unless he wanted something!). Karen

Basically, in there is a comfy chair, a table a telephone and a notice board. The telephone is a payphone. The 'Head' told us that the adults never answer that phone, and they never use that phone. It is the kids' phone. He recommended that we phone Louis on that phone so as Louis wouldn't have to keep paying out the money. BUT, Louis doesn't 'do' phones, so I asked if I could write instead, and he said that would be a brilliant idea, and suggested postcards, but to try the phone. I won't be sending Louis with a mobile phone.
