I think it went well...

The responsible officer was there :o:o:o . After 6 years of avoiding us (even when legally required to be there), we finally met her. And Zem wouldn't let me do anything about it (forcefeeding her the entire SEN COP, boots upside the head, etc...) :shame:

It seems that the statement we all did last year is now going to be 'prioritised', and we should get it back "with a few words changed..." soon. Only 2 months illegally late :wallbash: And her excuse was so loaded with irony: "We've been too busy dealing with September's admissions." Just because at the last tribunal (which she failed to appear at) we forced them to abide by the law...

The look on the deputy head's face when he was told that his was the best resourced school in the LEA for ASDs

Unfortunately, it does look as though Com has to hit a teacher before they pay attention to his needs and anything serious is done for him.

Anyway, thank you all for the good wishes, I'm sure Zem will be on later tonight with the pertinent details.

Thanks loads for all the support, especially Phas and Mrs Phas who helped so much behind the scenes :notworthy:

The meeting was not an emergency review even though that is what the exclusion letter said. The DH was pretty pushy about that even after I quoted the letter and the Responsible Officer even said we couldn't have a review even though I know by law we can call an emergency review!

so it started a bit badly but finally we agreed that the point of the meeting was to sort out Com's provision so that he could actually go back to school, which is what a review is anyway, more or less.

Once we pointed out one or two of the irregularities in the exclusion the DH decided it was probably better not to discuss it - very wise :P

The LEA admitted for the first time ever that there is no specific provision for high ability AS kids in the authority and no other school capable of catering for Com's needs. Also the school can't fob him off on the new unit because it can't take kids above Y7 until the new school is built in 2008.

so we tossed a few pros and cons around and roundly blamed the RO for not amending Com's statement and guess what - the statement has been amended and is just about to be posted out, just too late to stop this all blowing up :wallbash:

Actually I don't think the statement was amended before last Thursday - just a sneaky suspicion

Anyway, the upshot is that Com is off school for a week with a doctor's note for anxiety and school have to set up all the provision we originally asked for plus some extra, including stuff like a laptop so he can access the curriculum independently at his own level and the possibility of flexi-schooling, before he gets back

And the LEA will look at his funding :o

sorry it took so long but my drunk dad kept phoning

It is quite shocking that a child has to snap before the powers that be will actually act. We were told more or less the same thing about David. He was too bright and they had nowhere to put him. Had I know then what I know now? But you do and I am sure that you will get the outcome that Com deserves. Let's just hope that it is sooner rather than later

Told you I would still be up. It' still early say's she using the match sticks on her eyes.

Hi

Glad things seem to get somewhere for you Zemansky >:D<<'> ..the " being too bright "sounds very familiar to me, wonder why most of LEA staff do not seem to get it, well may be they are not really bright, if not what else...

money off course!!!

Take care.

Malika.

Zemanski,

Our LEA doesn't have any provision for the more able pupils with ASD either. I think it is something that all LEAs are going to have to start considering.

How do you feel about flexi-schooling? We tried it with A and if he could have adapted to the sensory pressures at school it would have been an ideal solution but it does put quite an onus on you.

>:D<<'> >:D<<'> Sounds like you had them by the short and curlies from the start...and like the best terrier in the world, hung on and on and on till they gave in, shut up and really listened to you. Fantastic result. As Carole says, just a shame that it took the events of last week to get it sorted. You guys did Com proud :notworthy::notworthy:

I think it is something that all LEAs are going to have to start considering.

It is something that should have been taken into consideration decades ago for both NT and AS kids. The root of the problem is that schools are organised on an age rather than ability basis.

our LEA is going to get a full range ASD unit at Com's school - the LEA specialist is working very hard for Com partly in order to get the school ready for the issues that will come up when the first stage (HFA only) opens at Easter.

Unfortunately it won't be resourced well enough initially to cater for the 20 or so AS kids already there except as an advice centre for the school (it's being set up in the caretakers bungalow because they're not allowed to set up any more portacabins on the site). However when the new build is finished in 2008 the unit will be extended to be a full part of the school and to serve both the children attached and the other ASD kids who don't need it's full services. It will be a resource base for the full ability range with chill out areas, social areas, extra IT facilities and teaching space (even it's own garden I think) and the whole school will be designed with ASD kids in mind - wider corridors than usual, no fluorescent lighting, no bells .......

roll on 2008!

Will Com survive in the meantime?

Sorry, Suze, I just kept it a bit close to my chest till the last minute
