  1. hi where are you from? i was diagnosed aged 25 at the maudsley hospital in london after self recognition and a period of poor mental health. try looking up adult ADOS. they used this when i was part of a research project in october. is there another family member or friend who has known you as a child that could go with you? i was told originally i had social anxiety disorder but did not believe them. you are lucky things are moving so quickly i am glad for you.
  2. hi and welcome. though i thought i had aspergers before i was diagnosed i remember it took me a while to come to terms with the reality of the diagnosis and there are some days i still find it hard. where are you from? charlotte

    Saying hello.

hi and wellcome, where are you from and where is your daughter hoping to go to university? i am 30 and was diagnosed with AS age 25 iam now at university in essex training to be a speech therapist. i wish your daughter the very best of luck.
  4. books wise for adults and children look on jessica kingsley's web site they have a specialist section. you could try just reading him a book slowly talking to him about it as and after you read it see how he reacts. he may well already be aware he his not like most other children and be wondering why and the knowlege could help him. to good books are a stranger in the playground and freaks geeks and aspergers syndrome as this is from a childs prespective and there are many many simalarities. you will learn as you go to a degree as every child with an autistic spectrum disorder is different. many groups are listed on the national autistic society website though it can be hard as i have found to find something for the more able end of the spectrume. an organisation that has helped me no end is autscape.org they have a yearly residential conference by and for people on the spectrum and those who are relatives etc. children do come and they proivide child care there and also have online forums you can join.
  5. can't help with all of the above but yes a specialist opptition may beable to help. i saw one a year ago and now have specialist tinted lenses which have made a lot of difference. his name is Ian jordan he is based in glasgow but belive there are some others around the contry if you email him (though i traveled there and was worth it) his web site has other info http://www.jordanseyes.com/index.htm
  6. what is the natural remerdey you use for her hypermobility pain?
  7. i used to refuse to go to school and was draged there by my parents. it is an experience i will never forget. i know now that it was mainly to do with class size, sensory difficulties and change. i ended up be taught at home by a tutor provided by the LEA. it was a long time before i was able to return to fulltime education but i am now doing a postgraduate degree and have worked for many years with special needs children. try as best you can with both children to keep things simple consistant and give them warning of what will happen. speak to them when they are calm about things such personal infomation safe. try writing and or pictures placed on the wall eg by the computer keep the language simple. maybe rather that what not to do have eg i must only give my bank information to my parents and ask them before giving it to others. try visual rewards for positive behaviour. if him having his own account is something he is not ready for yet then can you have one where you also have to sign for him to have money out so the only money he has access to is cash. or two seperate accouts one with most of his money in that is kept safe from his ability to transfer and access (i dont know if this is possible). could you enlist the help of a local police officer to show him what happens rather than yourself?
  8. you could get advice on appealing the funding desision. contact the national autistic society and any local organisation in your area
  9. will be interested to hear if you find any good local groups in brighton area as once i finish my course i may well move back that way. i am enjoying my course and find the staff very supportive and helpful though i am not so keen on colchester and the university though i think that is largely as till i came i know know one in the area and that was only a tear ago. you may want to look into a yearly conference that happens called Autscape www.autscape.org i have met a lot of friends there and found i have learnt the most though attending the conference. if you should wish you can email me privately as we live so close to each other.
  10. i feel very similar to how you are describing. when i am at my parents house and i do not have control over who stays so much i tolerate others staying but feel very self conscious around them and very much put on an act i find it hardest to eat around them and talk in my normal relaxed manor. i find the same when i go to stay away from home in other peoples houses or to eat out unless i am with a few very close friends.
  11. hi i am charlotte am from hastings (i know brighton well) i am at university doing a postgreaduate course at essex univirsity. i was diagnosed with AS five years ago i am now 30. i have found meet and chating to others on the spectrum of simmalar ability to myself to be the best thing and the thing that has helped me the most. i continue to learn about myself and ASD and it has taken me time to accept and just be who i am most of the time though i still am very good at hiding.

    Hi!

hi i have AS and have worked with kids with ASD for many years. i dont think you should give in to every whim for one moment. could you spend time with hime creating a picture/photo based time table of his week showing when he is at school and when he is not. for the morning you could put his rouine in order wash, teeth, get dressed, breakfast go to school in car with mum (whatever) after school who picks him up and when any clubs or events that normally happen on acertain day, supper, bedtime routine. weekend events. attaching them with bluetack or velcrow so you can change things. then if posible at the end of each day go through the following day with him pointing at each picture in turn. if this is to much for him break the day down into parts not going though the next till the first is done. maybe when he is collected from school you could have a small version to show him show what you will do now and next (known as now and next cards) he may work better with words if he is very good at reading. is there a specific thing or things he finds hard?

hi all i am 30 and from east sueesex though at uni in essex
  14. hi as i read your message i became more interesded as soon as you said hastings. I am from hastings and home for a month at present from uni. i am 30 am training to be a speech and language therapist have many years experience working with children with ASD and have AS. i would say yes very much so do everything you can to get him statemented and assessed as thoroughly as possible while he is young as the older he get the harder this process is to get started. there may also be some things that can be done to help him with school at present, but it may be that mainstream and large class sizes are not right for him. I know now i would have been much better off in a smaller school but then i was not diagnosed so no one could reason my difficulties.
  15. hi i am 30 and have AS and am studying at my local uni. to my knowledge there dont seem to be any local groups round here for adults and am just wondering if there is anyone one here that is farlly near me that might like to keep in touch.
  16. hi i am 30 and have AS and have worked with children on the spectrum for over ten years now (though i will readily admit i am always learning). i certainly experience what you are saying about reading others emotions as i find it difficult unless the emotion is at one end of the scale or the other (happy or sad) and clearly expressed laughing big smile or crying. outside this i can be aware with those i know well that something is not right but unable to place in what way. I became aware only a few months ago that eyes show expression (though i can not read this) and this was through a discussion on work placement with a speech and language therapist (which i am training to be). you should not feel bad ASD is a very complex thing and learning goes on happening. my parents are still very much learning about me

    Hello

where are you from? if you feel you could read around these subjects there are many books available, it may help to go for some by people on the spectrum. a good range can be found on the jessica kingsly publishing website which has a special section on autism, here you can find the names and then go to a search engine such as book butler to find better prices. i found books and meeting others was the best thing for me.
