    the funeral

Niki, Make sure the hard drive has been destroyed because old broken computers have been sent abroad and private information such as bank details have been taken off the hard drives. Jen
  2. If a HV referred you than it will be in the health visitors notes which would be available to all the HV. So I would ring them tomorrow to find out what is going on? Jen
  3. It was an interesting thought provoking book. The descriptions in were so accurate. Jen
  4. OT in our area are not qualifed in SI therefore they are of little use to ASD kids with sensory issues. In the next trust to us they do refer some children to a private OT. (The one our son is seeing). OT has helped my child, its one of the things that has consistantly made a difference, however it is costly and time consuming. Jen
  5. I am dreading my son going back to school. It is so difficult for him to get through the school day. The school is fantastic and very supportive he also has an excellent LSA. Saying that I still get called out of work several times a term to go and settle him down when he gets distressed. He is a child who struggles enormously to try to fit in a mainstream school due to his sensory problems mainly. But he also does not fit in a special school. Jen

    The Out of Sync Child

This is a fantastic book not to be missed. I liked it because it talked alot about sensitivites with children with ASD, dyslexia, dyspraxia etc. It gives you clear descriptions of children and is easy to read. Jen
  10. Sensory kids tend to prefer electric toothbrushs. If you child eats baby food in jars you can always try other types and bring in more flavours, it does sound like it is a texture preference. Jen
  11. Glad to hear Robert is settling in and being happy. He deserves a chance to show his beautiful character. Fantastic to know you have the support of someone sitting on the board that is interested in disability. Remember you are not only helping Robert but you are laying down the foundations stones for other child who have special needs. Jen
  12. Take time and do what you have too. Let your family support you and don't worry about the vacuming! Your family loves you for who you are. Jen
  13. yu gi ou competition or a child could be spoken to by several people at once and see if the child can understand what he/she has been told. It would make the children understand that noise distractions cause problems with understanding Jen
  14. Hi Caroline, Why don't you write another letter (you are wonderful at writing) saying you are aware that the staff have concerns and so does the headmistress but stratergies need to be put in place straight away. The only way your child will be included into main stream school is if the staff understand your childs behaviours and the reasons why. Then they can plan ahead and hopefully your child will be able to manage in mainstream school. Hence, it is essential for the headmistress to arrange training for her staff in ASD as soon as possible. Also send a letter to the school governors. How much support will your child have in the classroom? A child can only be provided with the right type of support if staff understand why the child is behaving in a certain manor. It will also help the staff to address there worries and concerns. Jen

    Confused

Its very important that you both spend quality time together to make things work. Its also important to have a supportive network outside of each other. Go and do something you will both enjoy. Jen
  16. What a fantastic achievement. Waves tend to relax children who have sensory problems it must be from all the pushing and pulling on the body. But the noise an all the people do cause problems. Jen
  17. Why don't you try sports clothing they do tight tops in size 8 + we have sportsworld where you can get some cheap bargains. ASDA also had the clingy swimming tops and shorts that you can buy to stop children burning I think they cost ?6 Jen
  18. Superb letter. The same happened with my son and in the end we had to gradually increase the hours he was in school. He had to be managed to spend some times out of the classroom on his own and than gradually a few of his friends were taken out of the classroom and joined him. He would go in just for mornings only, than gradually spent 10 minutes at the end of lunch time until we managed to include lunch times, than the afternoon sessions. It took us ten months before he finally attended school full time. Hes 9 years now and we still need to be very careful, he goes in on the teacher training day to meet his teacher, sit at his desk, observe where he hangs his coat up and line up. He than misses the first day of school and attends on the second day when all the confusion has settled. At the end of the school year he misses sports days. Its a case of the staff using their knowledge, discussing with his parents and making plans for things he can not and can do. There are times when he can not be included because it would just be too distressing. Keep the communication channals open and say to the head mistress you both need to work together and be able to discuss what it happening but also make sure it is in writing. Jen
  19. Before you define ASD friendliness you need to state what ASD is and how it is so variable then you can go on to say that the majority of things which are conductive to ASD children also help normal child learn. Discribe environment etc. Jen
  20. I think you handled the situation very well. But I think you need to put it in writing what happened and how your son's school had prepartation for him. Your son should of been taken out of the classroom into a quiet hour which would of allowed him to calm down. Emphaise that he was only in school for one hour and this is not long enough to make any discisions on your son's edcuation especially with this being the first day. Say you have contacted the other specialist who have worked with your son and they can offer advice to the school. Remember unless something is documented than it did not happy so always document any concerns or meeting, sending letters to the school confirming what was said and what has been or needs to be planned to address your sons needs. If your son does get excluded you can use this information either to go to tribunal or to get extra support or a special school place. Send a copy to the school governor and head teacher. We had an head mistress just like this one. I recently met my sons old ASD specialist teacher, we were talking about attitudes and I told him I believed if myself and his team had not been proactive for my sons needs than the headmistress would of excluded him in year one, the ASD specialist teacher said she would of excluded him in Reception class. Looks like you have lots of fighting to do for your son. Please remember to try to keep CALM and keep communication channals open, although with staff like this head mistress it can be very difficult. Have the school filled in a communication dairy, if so who filled it in and what did it say? Sounds like your son has a supportive LSA. Jen
  21. I do not buy new clothes in for September because my son does not like the feel of new uniform. We have to wash it several times before he wears it. My son is so stressed come September that having new shoes and clothes only increase his anxiety. So we buy shoes in January and replace school clothes as needed through the year. Christmas present shopping takes me two days to do and I go out and buy it all together (I hate shopping). We save all our Tesco vouchers and use them at xmas time to cover all the shopping (its amazing how all the small amounts build up). Jen
  22. We have good support and resources but we have had to go to tribunal once (nearly twice) but LEA settled it the week before. If seems those who speak loudest get the resources but it should not be like that. Jen

    Weight Watchers

Its not difficult to lose weight but it is difficult to keep the weight off. I prefer to replace something bad with an healthy option that way you keep the weight off. Also planning more activity in your day is good. You can buy gym ball and exercise video, this is very good for people who have weight round the stomach area. If you have problems losing weight it a good idea to get your bloods checked for thyroid or glucose problems both of these conditions can cause weight gain. Jen
  24. If your daughter likes the texture is there not another material you can use to replace it. Maybe your could use soft bananas. Or there is a childrens toy which has tiny beards in and you can use it to shape and decorate things it is call floam this is advised on TV and is available in toy shops. The other thing you could do it take your child to a shop which has lots of different cushions and materials and let your child feel them, see what she prefers and buy some.
