stressedmumto2 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 Hev, just wanted to say that is fantastic news. They will provide transport which will be a taxi unless they think he can manage a train but I think they do deals with the taxi services anyway. It's great news for you both though, have you been tolook at either school?
carrieq Report post Posted May 1, 2007 The weekly boarders at the residential special school where I work get taxied home for the weekend with an escort. We have only had one child go by train and he had an escort who took him door to door. Carrie
JenRose Report post Posted May 1, 2007 some good news at last for you Hev. Have they said when you can go and look around?
bid Report post Posted May 1, 2007 At last!! Don't worry about the transport...your LEA will fund a taxi, and if there are any other kids from your area going to the same school they will probably all go together. let us know how you get on with the visits! Ohforaquietlife Report post Posted May 1, 2007 That's great Hev but why so far away?! Devon is miles to come home every weekend. What's so specific about these schools that more local Kent ones can't provide? Just wondering as a fellow Kent resident! Ohf!

Kazzen161 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 No way would I contemplate sending my child to a school that I had not visited. I may be able to tell you about the Hants one, and someone in Devon may be able to tell you a bit about that one. The Devon one does seem a bit far - how long will the trip there take? (RAC route finder will tell you approx time) - and remember that you will want to visit there for Reviews and things like Xmas celebrations, parent meetings, end-of-year celebrations. I would want to know why the LEA have suggested these two schools in particular (and remember you have the right to propose your own choice of school, if you can find one that is suitable). Kathryn Report post Posted May 1, 2007 So far, so good, hev, glad things are moving finally in the right direction. I'm sure both schools will welcome a visit from you before you decide, and you'll probably have loads of questions to ask. K x
bid Report post Posted May 1, 2007 Of course you can visit them both, Hev Have a think, because you might want to go without Steve the first time so that you can really take everything in. I also think that if you have someone to go with you it's very helpful. I had to go on my own, and I felt very overwhelmed by the whole thing. I really wanted a second opinion. Also, if you feel any school is too far away you can say so. One place we were asked to consider was on Tyneside, and for us that was just too far. The school my son went to in the end was about 3 hours away from us, and that seemed to work fine. Good luck, hun. Bid <'>
Kazzen161 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 My LEA wanted to send T to a school in N Yorks - that was about a 5 hour trip by car. On a weekend he would have got back at 8/9pm on the Friday and would have had to leave at 2/3pm on the Sunday. He went to a school 40 mins away, and his college is 2 hours away. Obviously we all want our child to go to a suitable school, but it has got to be workable. It is useful to have someone with you on a visit - you do tend to forget stuff otherwise. www.oaasis.co.uk has a sheet on things to look for in a residential school. Look at their Ofsteds and also ask for a copy of their latest care side inspection (it tells you about things like their provision for activities, food, etc). The schools may have web-sites (some give a tour of the school) + you can ask for their prospectus. Karen
