  2. my friends daughter went to broading school and she use to bring her back in the week but it caused too much confusion so now she leaves her all week and collects her of a Friday. She misses her daughter very much but she knows her daughter is much happier the residential school are fantastic and contact her frequently. You could always try it and see. Your childs happiness is the most important thing. He has already shown he is very happy by the number of meltdowns he has. Good luck with what ever you decide Jen

    I am seething.

Tell your husband you are not happy that you had to cope during half term week so could he book off some time at the end of July and August to help you cope with the summer holidays because you find it so stressful. Say you need to work as a team with the children and you need his support. Also say you have to spend time together as a couple otherwise the marriage will not work. Write down the dates for him, start as you mean to go on. He can help with the children this week and spend some time with you when the football is not on Jen

    Autism outreach

The ASD team can only give advice to schools but schools do not have to follow it. ASD teams do push for resources and assessements for the children. Our team have made a big difference and now within our area all ASD children have a sensory assessment done of their learning area. All they have finally got it through to the LEA that if you do not provide support and guidance to these children when young than the cost support and disruption to the school and LEA only increases with time and therefore is not effective. 6. my son has always walked on his toes. His last two/three toes have started to turn inwards to accomodate his balance. I was concerned that if the small toes continue to turn inwards than it would cause a problem with his circulation. Hence, I took him to the doctors and asked for a referral. The doctor told me his theory are children do not need their small toes as they do nothing. I said I was not happy with this explanation and I would like a second opinion. We were referred to a podiatrist who put insole supports into his schools, these have been raised over 3 months and have just been reviewed agaoin. My childs lower spine and mid spine was also being put out of alignment due to the way my child was walking. Walking on toes also affect the muscles in the legs. Jen
  7. We got our sons files copied for free and they were also hand delivered. If you are going to appeal it is a good way to get all the documents photocopied. But it does take a few months to receive all the paper work. Jen

    is this cruel?

young hildren can become dehydrated far quicker than adults. Hence, they should be allowed to have a drink of water for safety reasons. Especially during hot days. Ask the school there policy on this and how the teacher will handle the same incidence in the future. Would she prefer for the parents to provide a bottle with water in. All the children in my childs school are encouraged to drink water. They also have large bottles of drinking water where the children can top up their empty bottles. Obviously this can cause disruption but if the children are encouraged to have a drink at specific times of the day than the disruption is reduced. My childs class keep all there drinking bottles in a box inside the classroom which means there is mininal disruption. There is a lot of research available for teacher that states children perform better when they are rehydrated hence encouraging the children to drink water is encouraged. Jen
  9. Why don't you take the form to the LEA office and get them to sign it or ask them to send a letter to you and the school stating they will pay the costs. Write a letter to the accounts department stating the LEA are responsible and give them the address to contact. Any more letters forward them to the LEA. Jen

    Meeting with HT

If your child has difficulties than it makes no difference him having 18 days off. If he went to school when he was unwell he would not be able to work so what does the headmistress want "a sick child in school." She is using your child absences as an excuse. You child needs thought plannings and advice from outside professionals. This can only come with a statement. Fight for the statement and go to tribunal if necessary. Good luck. Jen
  11. You could say as your son gets older that you will both be able to learn better how to handle different situations. This than gives your son stratergies to use in the future. We always tell our child he is the wonderful person he is because he has autism and we would not change him. We also had to teach our son the difference between ASD and temper. We had to tell him after each episode if it was ASD or a temper. We discussed the feelings and how they made him feel. They do have there good days and bad days. Jen

    Quick Ask

Teachers are supposed to check the guidelines every year for children who have problems sitting exams. Some teachers can not be bothered to check. Insist with your childs teacher, senco and headmistress once they do it once then they get better in supporting your child through examinations. My son has a break in the middle of every exam. He goes out to bounce a ball which gives him time to reduce his sensory input. It also means he can complete the exam paper. Jen
  13. It is normally difficult to secure a place at a residential school due to the cost of placement. If a child does go it does not mean they have to be resident all work. If the school is not too far than your child could just stay at school for a few nights depending on what is happening at the school in the evening. You should go and look at the residential school first and than decide if it is suitable. Obviously your child is not happy where he is and excluding your child is only dealing with the problem short term. Jen

    second IEP

my son suffers from alot of sensory problems so the plan is to prevent sensory overload hence ensuring he can access his education and prevent sensory overload. Missing the first offical day at school in September makes a hugh difference and reduces his sensory overload. Jen

    second IEP

Does any one have a second IEP for their child which rolls over from year to year. For example my child always attends school on the teacher training day to meet his teacher sit at his desk etc, he then misses the first school day so he avoids all the confusion. The week before half term my child needs to be taken out of the classroom for the majority of the sessions to prevent sensory overload. At the end of the school term my child misses the last day of term due to it not being stuctured. During exams my child comes out after 10 minutes to bounce a ball than goes back in to finish off his work. This ensures he can complete the full test instead of getting tired and frustrated. I am in the process of discussing this with my childs senco teacher and LSA. The aim is to prevent things happening because of the time of year. His normal IEP is what the teacher, LSA and parents are aiming for him to do within a set time period. Jen

    Here we go again!!

Carrie, Make sure you write down what has happened since your childs support has been reduced and how it has been handled. Put this in a letter to the school and Ed Psy it will be good evidence for extra funding. The school and ed psy sometimes leave things out so if it is in writing that you have written evidence what happened and how it affected your child and his access to education. Jen
  19. If the statement has been finalised than the only action you can take is to go to tribunal. By going to tribunal the LEA will have to review your childs needs and he/she will have to be reviewed by the Educational Psy. Some LEA will settle before going to tribunal but at least you will get a fair trial. All the LEA will do with your letter will be read it and file it. Jen
  20. Thamks to all the moderators and IC wiz kids for getting the site up and running. Do we need to change our passwords or not? Jen
  21. Sounds like you daughter has a sensory problems and this can lead to them having a meltdown. There is a lot of information on sensory integration on the internet. Jen
  22. Along time ago I read a document that listed all the LEA and the number of tribunals that had taken place. Does anyone know where this information is? I have asked our local councilor to ask why alot of parents in our area have to go to tribunal to get the correct provision for their child and why was the LEA are prepared to pay thousands of pounds going to tribunal when they should be more prepared to sort out the childs needs. Obviously if I have the audit information to back up what I am saying we are likely to get better results. Jen

I read the book over Easter. It identifies how ASD affects the other sibling. It also shows how desperate parents are to try all sorts of things. The family tried diet, enzymes the sunrise programme (I can not remember what else). It also takes the reader along the path of difficulties caused by LEA's not addressing the childs needs and the battle the parents need to go through to get the right provision. The parents refused to have their child educated away from home but in the end they had no option but for him to go and board in a school. Reading the book was like going on a roller coaster of emotions. The parents done the best they could for there child and there were many happy memories along the way. Jen
  24. Hi Klou, I think it would be benefical to talk to your health visitor about your concerns. A lot of health centres have special clinics run by specialist for bed wetting. GP do not have any training in ASD. My friend is a GP and he did not notice his daughter had problems. His wife kept telling him she was worried about there daughter but he kept telling her she was just a slower learner. Eventually she was diagnosed ASD Jen
  25. Hope you find the answer to your daughters anxieties soon. Enjoy your baking it gives you time to unwind. Sending lots of <'> <'> Jen
