I'm very new but I've been trying to read as much as possible to know more about here. There seem to be a lot of children srtarting a new school after the Summer Holidays. Can we make a list so we know who is changing schools and what the views of the both the child and adults are about the move? My YS who is 8 will be moving to an Autistic Base Unit within a mainstream school, it is about 18 miles from home and he will be travelling by taxi every day (paid for by the LEA) He is mainly looking forward to it although he says he will keep his 'best friend' P from his old school. I am relieved that the LEA have, hopefully, sorted out his placement and now he will be in full time education. Louise

Don't know your full story but can tell even from this thread that you have had a fight and a half. Well done for holding on to the end and getting what you want and your son needs. It is worth all the tears and sleepless nights when you finally win. Louise

Sounds as though that may be another person who may be 'restarting' their life again once school restarts. I think we will all find it strange with our children in school. Louise

Hi Mike, your new school sounds great. Hope you have a lovely party. My youngest son who is 8 is going to start his new school next term as well - he will start in August because Scottish school holidays go from the end of June to the middle of August. Louise Sorry ended up with a double post

That may be the official situation but when I asked about theCo-ordinated Care Plans I was firmly told by my YS's H/T that they were not worth the trouble of doing ...she did agree that YSwould be an ideal candidate for one because of the amount of people involved but apparently we would not get any further help/money for school by getting one. ES has not got one either despite having a record of needs from 2000 - 2005 (when they stopped on 15th November)

Wonder what the rules are for Scotland??? My YS(8) was excluded for 27.5days in the school year and was on part-time schooling the resty of the time .Part-time as in between 1 - 2 hrs a day. School claimed that he couldn't cope with more hours than this. Next term he will be going to a new school after the holidays in August wre he will be in their Autistic Base - there will be 4 children in the classroom with 2 adults - 1 teacher and 1 SLA - and he will be full-time. Hurray Louise

Didn't realise you were vegetarian Bard... Louise -
Depends on the ed psych..... I had a home visit for my ES, talk on the phone (whilst in Aldi) for DD and just school visits for YS. They were all visited in school- initally observation and then a mixture of working with /talking to the child. Usually they like to see the child in more than one seeting at school and it takes more than one visit. Louise

YS is away at Nana's... we have loo AND bath but need floor covering;hand basin and showerscreen. Louise

Must send the letter out for the end of the month - ys's renewel result came yesterday - high level care and low level mobility; same as last time and no renewal until 2012. Louise

No answers I'm afraid but at least 2 out of 3 of my children could do with the advice. Louise

Who allocates you a mentor? Is it possible to get another mentor? Is anyone else, besides us, aware of how your Mentor makes you feel? Sorry, no other ideas at present. Louise

Mumble is there an advocacy service for students - maybe student's union? I'm well out of touch with Student's union - almost 25 yrs since last delt with them. Sounds as though you need a decent Mentor who can help you with the needs you raised of: I will do whatever it takes, however much work, however much effort, even facing up to things like presentations and conferences which absolutely terrify me, if it means I can stay in what I'm doing. I worry constantly that my supervisors will turn round and tell me I'm 'not good enough' and ask me to leave. I'd hoped mentoring would help me address these fears and the specific issues they relate to. I did my nurse training and once qualified we were expected to Mentor the in-coming students and all the aspects you raise were things that I assumed as a Mentor we were suppose to help with (with support from the tutors for us Mentors). What aspects does your Mentor help you with? I find this thread very interesting because I'm sure in about 6/7 years time these will the problems my ES will be facing. Louise

I imagine that you should declare it - if an insurance company can wriggle to avoid paying out they will. Louise

Clare does your son get support at school? ..... if he refuses to use bus would you eligible for a taxi paid for by education transport? My ES has been going to school by taxi for 3 years now as his place at school (20+ miles away) is classified as an Education Placement due to his 'needs' rather than an Education request. My YS will be going to school by taxi in August when he starts new school. I had to fight to get the taxi for ES but everyone agreed that it was necessary. Louise

Oh you are the meanest ever - every one needs a Baby elephant - I have 3 would you like 1 of mine.... If I don't have Baby elephants what on earth makes the racket on the stairs and in the evening in the rooms above the sittingroom ? That's what it sounds like from down here! May be it's just one of these? Louise
