Mumble Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Mumble, I'll definately be there at the later time, with DH and 3 kiddies........anyone know how far Greenwich is from the London Eye? DH and kiddies want to go on it at some point before we travel back to Sheppy The London Eye is great - if you get worried about the height or whatever, you can sit on the bit in the middle. Being totally enclosed, it will be 30 minutes you won't have to worry about where the kids are. Only thing to consider is that the queues can be very long and quite 'shovy' - I would find them difficult and I'm an adult. Even if you pre-book tickets it's for a timed period, so there are still queues within that. When I went, my sister and I got tickets for the first 'spin' of the morning and then got there early for that time which meant we didn't have to queue. If you do want to go, it might be worth contacting them in advance to see if you can get in through the exit? Now as to getting there - how do you want to travel? On the train, Greenwich to Waterloo East (which has a bridge link to Waterloo and is the nearest station to the Eye) is only 15 minutes. By car - no idea, but definately longer. There are also direct low level buses. Will have to sort the Congestion Charge too, think we can prepay that? I don't think you have to pay the congestion charge at the weekend. 10:30am on Saturday 14th July 2007 at the Burnt Out Wreck: Mumble Mopp (with a badge) Bard (with a badge) DMB Lya (with purple hair) + 2 Tally (provided she gets back on the DLR after getting off at Mudchute!) 12 noon on Saturday 14th July at the Burnt Out Wreck to walk to the park: Bid Baggy + 4 Hev (with hidden weapons)
bid Report post Posted July 5, 2007 (edited) Just to check...is DMB plus 1 coming to meet the 12 o'clockers at the BOW and escort us back to the rest of the gang in the park?? I am planning to travel with Kathryn, so you could add her to the 12 noon list, Mumble Boho Edited July 5, 2007 by bid
Bagpuss Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Oh, that's great news about the congestion charge . Would probably travel to London Eye via tube I think. I'm not going on it, tried the one in York, and it scared me silly. Especially when it stops at the top ..........I thought it had broken down and we were stuck up there ........then when we eventually got moving again, I was so relieved, until it carried on moving straight past the exit ..............hadn't realised it went round and round and round........ BTW, without sounding totally stooopid..............which end is the bow? I think I'll look for someone very sparkly and tall with lurverly hair.....and very, very, well kempt David, you know what I look like, if you see me wandering around accosting tall sparkly well dressed peeps, grab me
MichelleW Report post Posted July 5, 2007 I want to try to avoid going into london, so will see if I can change train at Rochester to go to Greenwich - then get the DLR to BOW. I just don't fancy trying to get 2 kids (with sensory and crowd issues) across london on the tubes! Hopefully I'll make the 10:30 meeting - if not, I have DMBs number. David Matthew Baker Report post Posted July 5, 2007 I don't mind acting as guide. Note to self though that does mean I'll need to print off a map. If anyone wants my mobile number feel free to PM me and I'll send it to you. On a side note from memory when I was on the London Eye it moved continuously just at a slow speed all the way around. I think the only time it gets stopped is for anyone who is disabled to get on or off. You get some great views from it. I've not been on the York one but have seen it and the London Eye is a lot bigger.
Mumble Report post Posted July 5, 2007 We're getting there! 10:30am on Saturday 14th July 2007 at the Burnt Out Wreck (B.O.W.): Mumble Mopp (with a badge) Bard (with a badge) DMB Lya (with purple hair) + 2 Tally (provided she gets back on the DLR after getting off at Mudchute!) Michelle + 2? 12 noon on Saturday 14th July at the Burnt Out Wreck (B.O.W.) to meet DMB + 1 to walk be guided to the park: Bid Baggy + 4 Hev (with hidden weapons) Kathryn Baggy, DMB's right the wheel just goes round once and doesn't stop. If you want to go there from Greenwich, I would advise taking the train rather than the tube, particularly on a Saturday (less busy, easier to get round), but it's up to you. By, BOW, I think Bid means Burnt Out Wreck, but maybe it would be sensible to mean at the bow of the BOW! (the bow is the front btw), although I don't know how close you can get. KMC Report post Posted July 6, 2007 Easiest way to get to Greenwich from The London Eye is to catch the ferry from Waterloo Millennium Pier to Greenwich. It takes about an hour all up but you dont have to change from the tube to the DLR etc and the ferry isnt often full on the weekend. Also means that you get to go past most of Londons landmarks... At the very least you should see: Houses of Parliament The top of St Pauls London Bridge Tower of London Tower Bridge Canary Wharf
KMC Report post Posted July 6, 2007 I dont know about car parking in Waterloo but there would have to be one somewhere. I know Eurostar has one. Driving Waterloo back to Greenwich... depends which way you go. Coming across the South of the river will generally take longer on the weekends. If you head over Waterloo bridge into the city and them come along Victoria Embankment, Upper Thames Street, The Highway, Limehouse link, Blackwall tunnel, it should take wround 45 minutes. Since its a weekend you do not need to pay congestion charging. If you ever need to pay it cclondon.com is where you would normally pay it.

I'm off to hairdressers this afternoon - just managed to get an appointment - but it's with a different hairdresser to the one I usually have! I was going to have it done next week - but now that I might be on TV on Monday, I thought I should at least have it trimmed and tidied up a bit!! Won't have time to have it coloured though! KMC Report post Posted July 7, 2007 All, I dont know how well you all know Greenwich, however I thought I might ensure that if you are coming over this side of the world, you dont get confused or lost. There are 4 railway/DLR/Tube stations at Greenwich. These are: Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich (DLR) - which is the one that you actually want to go to Greenwich (DLR) - which is one stop past the Cutty Sark on the DLR and is about 10-15 mins walk back to Cutty Sark or about 1 min on the DLR Greenwich (Mainline Trains) - Is next to Greenwich DLR so same time frame as above back to Cutty Sark North Greenwich (tube) - This is actually the O2 Arena. Is probably about 40 mins - 60 mins walk to the Cutty Sark. Not recommended. Be careful, dont get confused and remember that the station that will get you closest is "Cutty Sark" NOT "Greenwich". cheers KC
Mumble Report post Posted July 7, 2007 I do know Greenwich and don't live far away which is why I previously, on this thread, posted travel directions. Although The Burnt Out Wreck Formally Known as the Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich on the DLR is closest, so best if you are coming by DLR or coming down by tube and changing, Greenwich mainline (trains) is equally as accessible (I posted walking maps up previously, I'll put them up again if helpful). The travel arrangements you have all made previously (even Tally going via Mudchute!) will be absolutely fine . I'm hoping the weather will be as lovely down here next week as it is today - sunny but not too hot - that way people who wish to can show off their sparklies but I won't be too hot in my jeans and the kids shouldn't get too hot running around. I've got a map of Greenwich park which might be useful in deciding where to congregate (makes us sound rather gangish doesn't it!!! ) once we make it to the park: Greenwich Park Pickniccy Places We will be entering through St Mary's Gate at the Westerly corner of the map. The area between the roman ruins (not a lot to see I'm afraid) and one tree hill is lovely (nice views and quieter than the rest of the park) - this would be my initial suggestion, as it's not far from the playpark either, however, thinking about it, if you go off path, there's quite a steep drop down (hence the views) but it might be dangerous for the kids. It's probably best if we decide when we get there - there isn't anything on at the bandstand that weekend so it would be quiet up there (the gardens are normally pretty quiet from what I rememeber, but I haven't been for about a year) and we could play spot the deer (or borrow one if anyone forgets their picnic ) Ooohhh, I'm getting excited now!!! Excited Mumble
Mumble Report post Posted July 7, 2007 I've just had a thought. 12 Noon people, so that's: Bid Baggy Hev Kathryn Bikergal Smiley (and others) If most of you are coming by mainline train into Greenwich rather than DLR to the Cutty Sark Station, would it be easier for DMB + 1 to meet you at Greenwich station to head for the park, as you'll be equi-distant at that point anyway, and you won't have to worry about getting lost walking to the Cutty Sark, particularly as you would, near enough, pass the park? Bard Report post Posted July 7, 2007 (edited) I'll looking forward to it but very aprehensive. You'll all be able to spot me, even without my badge - I'll be the only person in Greenwich that day without hairdressered/coloured hair!! Not quite, although I do have lots of what are referred to as 'natural highlights' by posh hairdressers. You'll all be able to spot me; short, stout, with hair like one of the more eccentric members of the Hogwarts teaching staff. If it's sunny, my hair will reflect it, so I'll be sparkly too!
