DaisyProudfoot Report post Posted October 5, 2005 Welcome to all our recent newbies and a very warm welcome to Destrum cos he's my eldest son . Hey, Donna, that Autistic/Artistic thing is so weird! My 9-yr-old son is AS and his teacher said she was beginning to be concerned about his twin sister too. I said "She's fine, she's just very ARTistic, not Autistic" perhaps it's the way her AS manifests, I've never felt the need to have her diagnosed, although there are some similarities but without her brother's aggressive streak - just daydreamy and arty I've always felt! linss Report post Posted October 6, 2005 Hi everyone, i'm new to all this and have found reading about everything so informative and supportive. My hubby and i have two children a girl of 2 and a little lad of 6 who has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers. We really enjoy our kids and yes our son is extremely difficult at times but we are really learning to celebrate his ways. There's a time when acceptance comes along and we realise now he's not going to suddenly "snap out of it" and be like every other kid. What i find that does constantly get me down is school ,we try so hard to be positive but the constant doom and gloom and throw away comments from teachers is so hard to take. anxiousmom Report post Posted October 11, 2005 Hi, My name is Sam and I have a 6 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. My son has always been excentric, outgoing and has a spongelike brain. Over the past 18 months I've been witnessing him becoming more unhappy at school - really REALLY struggling to get people to play with. I've tried pretty much everything I can to help but it's still the same... he's awkward and just doesn't fit. Although he's saddend by this I then see how is is with his peers and I'm not all that suprised... his teacher thought it might be that he talks so much more advanced... yet the older kids think he's weird too. But I love him and think he's great... we are best pals! I only came across AS about a month ago... he seems to fit the profile... but who knows - maybe it's just his over indulgent mum who's made him like this? babymithel Report post Posted October 22, 2005 Hi my name is Dawn, my eldest child has either Aspergers or Autism!? She is 15, we are in the middle of getting her re-assessed. She was given a Statement at the age of 7yrs, and i was told she had moderate learning difficulties, and short-term auditory memory problems. But that was about it??!! Quite recently, i was reading the newspaper, and there was a story about a boy that had Aspergers, and while reding it, i realised that my daughter had a lot in common with this boys problems. I took my daughter to the GP and got her referred back to get re-assessed. So far, she's been seen by the Ed Physc, and observed by an Autism Specialist Teacher, i'm waiting to hear about our next appt. I thought it would be helpful to get a proper label for my child to use, as she will be heading into the big bad wide world very soon, and hopefully people will be able to give her a break if they understand that she has these problems. ange Report post Posted October 25, 2005 hi there everybody!! I'm ange from ipswich. I have four children. Anna is 1, harry 7, jack 10 and devin 13. Harry has autism and learning differculties, and is in a mainstream school in an SSC class. He was diagnosed when he was about 4 years old....and boy what a relief that was!!! Devin also has autism, although on the lower end of the spectrum, he attends mainsteam school, which he finds quite differcult at times. He was diagnosed when he was 10. He probably would have slipped through the net, had it not been for me recognising the traits, after Harry had his diagnosis. They both were diagnosed through the DISCO assessment. Welcome to the wonderful world of ange!!! look forward to reading the forum and having a natter!!
virtualvisual Report post Posted October 25, 2005 Hi Ange nice to see you made it here Suppose I'd better post in here now (I've been avoiding it for a while ) Hi all I'm Beth I'm married to Graeme who is a long distance driver which leaves me alone to cope most of the time. We have 3 sons (Alex 12 who has Asperger's and ADD, James 11 who has learning difficulties and a violent temper but still no closer on diagnosis and Ryan 6 who is just bouncy and lives with his Mum during the week) and one daughter Rosita 11 and NT. As I mentioned in another thread Graeme is my second husband and he has adopted the 3 older children who were from my first marriage to a violent schizophrenic (long story and a lot more to it) who died just after I made the decision to leave. The professionals have latched onto this as a reason for James temper but that problem has been there since birth, one psycologist even had the cheek to suggest Alex didn't have Aspergers he was just grieving til I pointed out that he was diagnosed long before his birth father had any problems. lancelot Report post Posted November 9, 2005 Hi all, I'm not really 'new' as i posted on here a couple of times before thinking that maybe using our real name wasn't that good an idea... so I thought up a proper user name instead. Now I sound like a really shifty character. Sorry! 3 kids, oldest boy is 9 with AS, younger two (7 and 4, but often asked if they're twins!) just plain crackers. DAS999 Report post Posted November 9, 2005 I can't remember if I ever introduced myself. My name is John Sometimes people call me Dave (school nick name) but I prefer John. I have posted a few times but I feel a bit out of place as I don't have a kid on the spectrum but a recently diagnosed girlfriend. She was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism / Aspergers, OCD and challenging behaviours. In day to day life she copes well but often has huge meltdowns and looses verbal communication for up to 24 hours. When she gets scared or anxious she lashes out (the challenging behavious) she also has food fads (only wanting crunchy foods (OCD bit)) I hope I am not too out of place on this site because it's my girlfriend (mid 20's) and not a child I am posting about. I try to reply to people's posts but I don't have much knowledge (sorry) I refer to my girlfriend as A, I don't know why because her name does not even begin with that letter but I didn't feel it was right to post her name without her knowing. Hope thats ok. Cheers for the advise so far in my posts and I hope my contribution to other posts has been ok.
